MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina – The University of Maine at Farmington softball team opened their week at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on the right foot, defeating Martin Luther in mercy-rule fashion and then coming from behind to walk off against VTSU Lyndon in game two.
Game One | 8-0 UMF in 5 innings
Jessica Horn led off the game with a single into left field and quickly stole second base, giving the Knights a runner in scoring position with nobody out. University of Maine at Farmington starting pitcher Mack Bergen (Winnipeg, Manitoba) quickly settled in, striking out Amelia Thiel and then getting Katelyn Rassat and Chloe Koschnitzke to ground out to end the early threat.
Farmington's bats heated up quickly in the southern sun, as Katie Morse (Dixfield, Maine) delivered a two-out RBI single to plate Bella Miller (Lewiston, Maine) in the bottom of the first, giving the Beavers an early 1-0 lead.
Farmington pushed across a second run in the bottom of the third. Jojo Daigneault (Canton, Conn.) led off the inning with a single to left. The next batter, Miller, reached on an error, giving the Beavers first and second with nobody out. The two moved over to second and third on a passed ball, setting up Morse, who drove a fly ball to right, scoring Daigneault to make it 2-0 after three.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Beavers put up a crooked number, scoring four runs on four hits and sending eight batters to the plate. Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine) led off the inning with a single but advanced all the way to third on an error by the Knights' right fielder. Sophomore outfielder Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) followed with a single, plating Paradis, and then quickly stole second to give the Beavers another runner in scoring position with still nobody out. Dow scored two batters later on an error that allowed Abby Wrinn (Wolcott, Conn.) to reach base safely. Later in the inning, junior third baseman Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) delivered a two-out, two-run single, extending the Beavers' lead to 6-0 through four.
After a shutdown inning from Bergen, the Beaver bats got back to work in the bottom of the fifth. Bergen led off the inning with a single but was quickly retired on a fielder's choice, allowing Paradis to reach base. After Dow reached on an error, Emily Collins (Moscow, Maine) followed with an RBI single to make it a seven-run ballgame. Wrinn followed with an RBI single of her own, scoring Dow and giving the Beavers the mercy-rule victory in walk-off fashion.

- All nine batters who got an at-bat recorded at least one hit.
- Dow and Daigneault each went 2-for-3 at the dish. Dow scored a pair of runs, while Daigneault scored once.
- Wrinn, Pike, and Morse each had a hit and two RBIs.
Leaders at the Plate – Martin Luther
- Horn, Thiel, and Hannah Ott each went 1-for-3, all singles for the Knights.
In the Circle
- Bergen was phenomenal all game for Farmington, going all five innings, surrendering just three hits and striking out four while walking none.
- Horn took the loss, going 4.1 innings, giving up 11 hits and eight runs, all of which were unearned.
Game Two | 3-2 UMF in 7 Innings
Madison Gould and Alexis Rogers led off the game with back-to-back singles to get things started quickly for the Spartans. The third batter, Taylor Russell, squared to drop down a sacrifice bunt. Russell was trying to give herself up, but the throw to first got away, allowing Gould to come around to score and moving Rogers over to third base. After Russell stole second, Castleton had runners at second and third with nobody out. Farmington starter Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine) dug deep and got the next three hitters to all fly out to right field to retire the side and keep the Beavers' deficit at just one.
Castleton doubled their lead in the top of the second on a two-out RBI double from Gould. Abby Hacker led off the inning with a single and came in to score on the Gould double.
After the 11-hit outing in game one, the Beavers' offense was quiet through the early innings in game two. Trista DeLong kept Farmington's offense at bay, retiring the first nine batters she faced.
Wrinn led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to break up the no-hitter. Wrinn stole second and then moved over to third with just one down. Pike followed with an RBI single to center to score Wrinn, cutting the Beavers' deficit in half.
First-year Lisa Truchin (Torrance, Calif.) took over in the circle for Mayo in the top of the fifth. Truchin was masterful in relief, retiring the first eight batters she faced. She did get into some trouble with two outs in the top of the seventh, giving up a double to Gould and a single to Rogers to put runners at the corners. Truchin got Russell to strike out swinging to end the threat and keep the deficit at one heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Daigneault led off the bottom of the seventh and reached base on an error by the Spartan third baseman. Pike followed with a rocket off the glove of the third baseman to put runners at first and second. Miller then came off the bench to lay down a beautiful sacrifice bunt, moving Daigneault and Pike over to second and third. The next batter, Dow, wasted no time, lacing the first pitch she saw back up the middle, plating two and giving the Beavers the walk-off victory.

- Dow went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
- Pike was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
- Wrinn went 1-for-3 with a run scored from the leadoff spot.
Leaders at the Plate – Castleton
- Gould was a tough out at the top of the Spartan order, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored.
- Rogers was 3-for-4 with a stolen base.
- Hacker went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
In the Circle – Farmington
- Mayo went the first four innings, giving up seven hits and two earned runs, striking out none and walking none, picking up a no-decision.
- Truchin threw three scoreless innings of relief, striking out four and surrendering just two hits to pick up her first win in her collegiate career.
In the Circle – Castleton
- DeLong went 6.1 innings, surrendering just four hits and one walk while striking out one in the hard-fought loss.

The Beavers return to action tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM against Castleton once again. Farmington will play game two tomorrow against Minnesota Morris at 11:00 AM.
