Baseball Drop a Pair in Return to New England

Written by: Aaron Goschke '25

LYNN, Massachusetts - On Saturday, the University of Maine at Farmington baseball team suffered two losses. The first loss came against the NAIA's Fisher College Falcons. The second defeat was against NAC opponent, VTSU Lyndon, which ended in a dramatic fashion.

Game One | Fisher 12, Farmington 2

After a quiet top of the first inning, Fisher College managed to take an early lead in the bottom half. Armando Torres sparked the offense with a leadoff single, stole second, and then advanced to third on a single by Yariel Salinas. Michael Wright's sacrifice fly brought Torres home, though Salinas was later caught in a baserunning error, ending the inning with Fisher up 1-0.

In the bottom of the second, Fisher extended their lead due to some costly mistakes by the Beavers. After Sam Wrigley (Farmington, Maine), a senior right-hander, struck out Gilbert Gomez, Gabriel Rivera singled. Following three Beaver errors, Fisher capitalized, pushing the score to 5-0.

The Beavers narrowed the gap in the fourth inning. Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine), was hit by a pitch and later scored on an error. Andrew Skory (Peabody, Massachusetts), drove in another run with a sharp single, cutting Fisher's lead to 5-2. Trent Holman (Dixfield, Maine), came in relief and secured the final out of the inning.

However, defensive lapses continued to plague the Beavers, leading to two runs in the fifth and three in the seventh. The accumulation of runs triggered the ten-run rule, concluding the game prematurely with a final score of 12-2 in favor of Fisher.

Game Two | VTSU Lyndon 6, Farmington 5

The Beavers grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against the Hornets, sparked by Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) who was hit by a pitch, followed by a double from Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) that positioned Bloch on third. Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) capitalized with a double to bring them home.

The Hornets responded in the bottom of the first, starting with Evan Duncan being hit by a pitch. Despite Will Harriman (Biddeford, Maine) striking out the next two batters, two subsequent walks loaded the bases, and a wild pitch allowed Duncan to score, trimming the lead to 2-1.

In the second inning, the Beavers extended their advantage to 4-1. Jayden Meader (Farmington, Maine) singled and advanced to second on Ike Wrigley's sacrifice bunt. Bloch's double drove in Meader, and Nate Coombs's (Thomaston, Maine) sacrifice fly brought home Bloch. Lyndon starter Jack Holley contained the damage, allowing only those two runs.

After a scoreless third and fourth, during which senior left-hander Aaron Goschke (Gorham, Maine)  came in relief for Harriman and navigated a bases-loaded situation without surrendering any runs, the Hornets closed the gap in the sixth. Bryan Nazario's two-out single scored two runs, bringing them within one. The seventh inning saw more trouble for Goschke, leading to a change on the mound with Lucas Tuttle (Framingham, Mass.) coming in relief. However, a fielding error allowed two more runs, giving the Hornets a 5-4 lead.

The eighth inning saw Wrigley double and a two-out single by Coombs tied the game at 5-all. The Hornets failed to score in their half of the eighth, and the Beavers couldn't capitalize in the top of the ninth.

In the dramatic bottom of the ninth, after a leadoff single by E.J. Camden and a tactical slash by Dale Ostermann put him at first and advanced Camden, Jameson Bloch, now pitching, picked off Camden at second. Despite this, the Hornets managed to load the bases and secured a 6-5 victory when Eyon Tembruell was hit by a pitch, forcing in the winning run.
