Written by: Aaron Goschke '25

SALEM, Massachusetts  – The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team fell on the road to the Salem State Vikings, 16-3, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Records:

Saturday's contest was the third game of the young season for the Beavers. With the loss, Farmington fell to 0-3, while the Vikings played their fourth game and earned their third win, improving to 3-1 on the season.

How it Happened:

Salem State opened the game rapidly on offense, scoring three goals inside the first three minutes of the game. Kaylee Rich got the offense going early for the Vikings, scoring the first goal of the game at 13:00. Laura Young was credited with the assist on the goal from Rich. Jordan Turcotte scored just 20 seconds later off an assist from Aislinn Bennett. Young netted an unassisted goal at 11:58 to stake the Vikings to an early 3-0 lead.

The Beavers responded with an unassisted goal from Abby Trefsger (South Portland, Maine) at 9:32 of the first quarter. Trefsger's goal stopped the run for Salem State momentarily as the Vikings answered with four straight goals to close out the opening quarter. Siobhan Smith scored a pair, while goals from Megan Parthum and another from Rich extended the lead to 7-1 after the opening 15 minutes of play.

Salem State maintained their momentum into the second quarter with Bennett scoring early unassisted. Bennett's goal was quickly followed by Parthum who found the net off an assist from Siobhan Smith. Later in the quarter, Salem State added two more on goals from Gracyn Smith and Bennett, further solidifying the lead, bringing the score to 11-1 at halftime.

The relentless pace set by Salem State carried into the third quarter. Rich found the back of the net once again, scoring unassisted early in the period. Turcotte added another unassisted goal, pushing the Vikings lead up to 13-1 with just over a minute and a half to play in the third quarter.

Trefsger interrupted Salem State's 10-0 scoring streak early in the fourth with an unassisted goal at 11:12. Trefsger followed with a hat-trick marker with 7:09 left to play to pull the Beavers back within ten. However, Salem State quickly responded to put a halt on any hope of a Beaver comeback. Goals from Turcotte and Rich put the game away, sealing the win for Salem State.  Bennett added one more unassisted tally in the closing seconds to complete the scoring on Saturday afternoon.
