Beavers Fall in Pair of Games with Thomas

Written by Aaron Goschke '25:

WATERVILLE, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington softball team dropped both games of a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader against Thomas College on Monday afternoon. In game one, the Beavers rallied from an early deficit to briefly take the lead, but a late push by the Terriers secured an 8–5 win. Game two was a defensive battle, with Farmington stranding runners in scoring position before Thomas capitalized on a pair of errors in the seventh for a 1–0 walk-off victory.

Game One | Terriers 8, Beavers 5

Thomas jumped out to a fast start in the bottom of the first inning, using two walks, a sacrifice fly, and a fielding miscue to plate three early runs. Farmington struggled to get the bats going through the first two innings, managing just one baserunner.

The Beavers responded in a big way in the top of the third. After Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine) worked a walk and Abby Wrinn (Wolcott, Conn.) singled, Emily Collins (Moscow, Maine) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Following a walk to Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine), Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) stepped up and crushed a bases-clearing double to left field, tying the game at 3–3. Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine) kept the momentum going with a single to center, driving in Pike and giving UMF a 4–3 lead.

Thomas evened the score in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double and reclaimed the lead on a two-out single, making it 5–4. Farmington didn't go quietly, though. In the top of the sixth, Allen singled and later came around to score on an RBI hit from Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine), tying the game once again at 5–5.

In the bottom half of the sixth, the Terriers capitalized on a passed ball and timely hitting to take control. After a leadoff single and a steal, Mackenzie Toner singled up the middle to score two runs, and a sacrifice fly added one more to give Thomas a decisive 8–5 advantage.

Farmington tried to rally in the top of the seventh, with Collins singling to right center, but she was caught stealing. Pike grounded out to end the game with one runner stranded.

The Beavers recorded eight hits in the loss, with multi-hit performances from Paradis and Allen, while Pike led the way with three RBIs.

Game Two | Terriers 1, Beavers 0

Both teams struggled to generate offense through the early innings. The Beavers opened the game with back-to-back singles from Jessica Dow and Maddie Pike in the top of the first but left both runners stranded. On the mound and in the field, Farmington held strong, retiring Thomas in order in the bottom of the first and keeping the Terriers off the board through six full innings.

Farmington's best scoring opportunity came in the top of the seventh. Olivia Paradis singled and was replaced by pinch runner Reilly Russell (Windham, Maine), who stole both second and third base. Melissa Mayo drew a walk and stole second, putting two runners in scoring position with two outs, but a groundout to the pitcher ended the threat.

Thomas was held scoreless through six innings by Mayo but capitalized on a pair of Farmington errors in the bottom of the seventh. After a leadoff walk and a bunt, the Terriers put runners on second and third. A fielding error on a ground ball allowed the winning run to cross the plate, giving Thomas the walk-off victory despite being held to just three hits.

Offensively, Dow went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Beavers, while Paradis added a single and Pike chipped in a hit and reached base twice. The Farmington defense was solid for most of the contest, committing only one error prior to the final inning and stranding seven Thomas runners.
