Game Recap: Baseball |

UMF Offense Shows Life, But Monks Control the Day

STANDISH, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday afternoon at Larry Mahaney Diamond. Despite a strong effort and a late rally in Game 1, the Beavers came up short in both contests, falling by scores of 8-4 and 5-1.

The Records:

With the pair of losses, UMaine-Farmington fell to 5-18 on the season. Saint Joseph's (ME) improved to 15-15 overall.

Game 1: Saint Joseph's (ME) 8, UMaine-Farmington 4

The Monks jumped out to an early lead in Game 1, plating three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Nic Frink led off with a double to center, and Dylan Brander followed with a towering two-run home run to give Saint Joseph's the early momentum. Dawson Gundlah later reached on a single and came around to score on a heads-up base-running play during a caught stealing attempt.

Saint Joseph's continued to apply pressure in the third. Ryan Kastle opened the frame with a solo shot to left, and Gundlah came through again with an RBI single that scored Jake Carlisle to make it 5–0. In the fifth inning, the Monks tacked on two more runs with a triple from Gundlah and a sacrifice fly from Alex Moore, pushing the lead to 7-0.

UMaine-Farmington showed signs of life in the top of the sixth. After a walk, a double, and an intentional walk loaded the bases, Paul Vachon (Brookline, N.H.) stepped to the plate and crushed a grand slam over the left field fence—his first homer of his career—cutting the deficit to 7-4. The blast was a much-needed jolt for the Beavers, but the Monks added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth via a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to make it 8-4. The Beavers went down in the 7th to seal the win for the Monks.

Aaron Goschke (Gorham, Maine) started on the mound for the Beavers and worked 3.2 innings. He allowed five earned runs on six hits while walking three and striking out three. Lucas Tuttle (Framingham, Mass.) came in for 2 innings of relief, giving up three runs on four hits. TJ Dorn (Westbrook, Maine) recorded the final out of the sixth inning, retiring the only batter he faced.

On the other side, Kyle MacKay was effective through five innings for Saint Joseph's, holding the Beavers to just one hit and two earned runs while striking out five. Luke Wearne pitched briefly in the sixth and was charged with two earned runs. Jake Carlisle entered with traffic on the bases and closed the game with 1.2
innings of scoreless relief to notch the save

Game 2: Saint Joseph's (ME) 5, UMaine-Farmington 1

UMaine-Farmington got on the board early in Game 2 when Ike Wrigley (Farmington, Maine) reached on an error and later scored on an RBI single to right field by Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine). The Beavers looked to build on the momentum but were held in check by a strong Saint Joseph's pitching staff.
The Monks tied the game in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Jared Wilhelm and took the lead for good with a sacrifice fly from Nic Frink.

In the fifth, Saint Joseph's delivered the knockout blow with a three-run inning. After a walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Nathan Brindle drove in a run with a single through the right side. Jack Carlisle followed with a sacrifice fly, and Jack Moltenbrey capped the scoring with an infield single that plated another run.

The Beavers had a golden opportunity to respond in the top of the fifth. Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) and Sargent both reached and advanced into scoring position, but reliever Jack Dyer came in and slammed the door with a strikeout to end the inning. UMF couldn't mount another serious threat in the final two innings.

Chris Albert (Bradley, Maine) started and pitched 3.2 innings for the Beavers, allowing two earned runs on five hits while walking three. Logan Holcomb (Hebron, Conn.) followed and issued two walks and allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning. TJ Dorn allowed one run while recording one out, and Jameson Bloch provided a strong finish, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings to keep the game within reach.

Zach Adams earned the win for Saint Joseph's, allowing two hits and one earned run over two innings. Alex Moore threw two solid innings of scoreless relief, followed by Andrew Keniston, who struck out two in 0.2 innings. Dyer shut down any hopes of a comeback with 2.1 dominant innings, striking out three and securing his second save of the season.
