LEWISTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team struggled offensively on Wednesday afternoon as four Bates College Bobcats combined to throw a no-hitter in a 17-0 victory.
The Records:
Farmington fell to 4-11 on the season after suffering its fifth consecutive loss. The Bobcats picked up their third win of the season, improving to 3-11 with the victory.
How It Happened:
Ian McAslan started on the mound, throwing five innings while striking out two and walking two. Max Dio followed with two innings of relief, striking out two and walking one. Christopher McGrail pitched a perfect eighth inning, and David Miller closed out the ninth to complete the no-hitter for Bates.
Offensively, Farmington was unable to get anything going at the plate. Defensively, the Beavers struggled with six errors, which extended innings, put extra runners on base, and led to big innings for Bates. Four of the six errors came in the first two innings.
In the bottom of the first, Keagan Ryan was hit by a pitch and then appeared to be picked off at first base. However, an errant throw as Ryan broke for second allowed him to advance all the way to third. He later scored on a sacrifice fly by Gibby Sullivan, giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead after one inning.
After two quick outs in the bottom of the second, a throwing error extended the inning for the Bobcats and put a runner in scoring position. The next batter, Nolan Bibbo, hit a ground ball to shortstop that was bobbled. Kelley took an extra step around third base, and Beaver shortstop Tyler Rosa (Morgan Hill, Calif.) attempted to throw behind him, but the throw was wild, allowing Bibbo to advance to second. A wild pitch then scored Kelley, and Ryan followed with an infield single to bring in another run, making it 3-0.
The Bates offense scored in every inning except the fifth and eighth, including five runs in the fourth and four runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.
On the mound, Aaron Goschke (Gorham, Maine) took the loss, pitching two innings and allowing three runs (one earned) while striking out two. Lucas Tuttle (Framingham, Mass.) and Maddox Santone (Fairfield, Maine) were bright spots for the Beavers. Tuttle threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, while Santone struck out two in a scoreless eighth.
For the Bobcats, Jack Margiloff led the offense, going 3-for-5 with five RBIs and a run scored. Ryan finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. David Swift and Ben Genser also recorded multi-hit games.
