Pair of Early Goals Push Beavers to First Win of the Season

FARMINGTON, MaineZoey Pennell (Saco, Maine) and Mikayla Wilcox (Farmington, Maine) scored just three and a half minutes apart in the opening quarter to help propel the Beavers to their first win of the season—and their first since 2023—with a 3-0 victory over Gordon College on day two of the Caryl Newhof Classic.

How It Happened:

After managing just two shots in Friday evening's match against Smith College, the Beavers' offense bounced back in a big way Saturday afternoon. Earning a penalty corner at the 4:20 mark of the first quarter, Bayley Casavant (Corinth, Maine) inserted the ball to Pennell, who stickhandled around a defender before slapping a shot past Gordon goalkeeper Allyson Stauffer to give Farmington an early 1-0 lead.

Shortly after, the Beavers earned back-to-back penalty corners, creating more scoring chances, but several shots were either blocked or turned away by Stauffer to keep it a one-goal game.

Farmington doubled its lead in the eighth minute when Ruby Taylor (Poland, Maine) forced a turnover and sent a long through pass to Wilcox. Wilcox carried the ball in front of the cage and finished past Stauffer to make it 2-0.

The Beavers continued to dominate in the second quarter, extending the lead to 3-0 when Abby Hanson (South Paris, Maine) buried her own rebound for her first goal of the season.

Following Hanson's goal, Farmington kept the pressure on, dominating both possession and chances. The Beavers outshot the Scots 16-2 in the first half.

Gordon showed a brief spark to open the second half, as Sarah Bourk recorded back-to-back shots on goal, but junior goalkeeper Ella Grant (Sturbridge, Mass.) made both saves to preserve the shutout.

Farmington's offense kept the momentum going, continuing to pepper the Gordon net. Stauffer stood strong, making seven saves in the third quarter alone to prevent the deficit from growing.

The Scots failed to record a shot in the fourth quarter as the Beavers cruised to a convincing win.

Game Stats:

For the game, Farmington held steep advantages in shots (29-4), shots on goal (22-2), and penalty corners (13-2).
