FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team was unable to keep pace with the quick-strike offense of Bates College, as the Bobcats scored three first-half goals on their way to a 4-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Leib Field.
The Records
UMaine-Farmington falls to 1-2-1 on the season, while Bates remains unbeaten at 3-0-1.
How It Happened
The Beavers nearly struck first just 30 seconds into the game. First-year forward Owen Spera (Gorham, Maine) got behind the Bates backline and rattled a shot off the crossbar, but the play was waved off for offsides. Moments later, Farmington earned back-to-back corner kicks. On the second, first-year
Garrett Gendreau (Oakland, Maine) headed a ball that looked destined for the net before Bates' Noah Greiff cleared it off the line to deny the Beavers.
Bates responded quickly, seizing control of the game. In the 10th minute, a corner kick from Wilson Smith was flicked on by Chris Bianco to Sebastian Iacovitti, who buried the opener. Seven minutes later, Luke Cunniffe made a strong individual play to beat his defender and fire home a right-footed strike past UMF junior goalkeeper
Hunter Frost (Monmouth, Maine), doubling the Bobcats' lead.
In the 33rd minute, Greiff pushed the margin to 3-0, finishing a feed from Danny Burke.
The Beavers held Bates scoreless for much of the second half, but in the 61st minute, Bianco notched his second assist of the day, slipping a short pass to Tomas Alberola in the penalty area. Alberola created space and slotted a shot through the legs of UMF goalkeeper
Dylan Gagnon (Hudson, N.H.), who had come on in relief of Frost.
Farmington managed just one shot in the second half and was unable to cut into the deficit.
