FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team's two-game winning streak came to an end on Monday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to Saint Joseph's College at Prescott Field. The Monks scored single goals in the first, second, and third quarters to secure the victory.
The Records:
Farmington fell back to .500 on the season at 3-3, while the Monks improved to 3-2.
How It Happened:
The Monks controlled possession from the opening whistle, putting the Beaver defense under pressure early. After having two shots blocked in the opening minutes, St. Joe's broke through when Mara Waryas used smooth stickhandling to get around a Farmington defender and fired a slap shot into the bottom-left corner of the cage.
Farmington struggled to generate offense in the first quarter but began to shift momentum early in the second. The Beavers drew a pair of fouls that led to back-to-back penalty corners in the opening three-and-a-half minutes, but both opportunities broke down before a shot could be taken.
Immediately after the second corner, the Monks transitioned quickly. Ava Markham carried the ball along the Beavers' defensive endline and sent a hard pass into the middle of the circle, where Waryas tipped it across to Kienna Haley on the back post. Haley redirected the ball into the cage to extend the lead to 2-0.
Farmington junior goalkeeper Ella Grant (Sturbridge, Mass.) came up big in the closing minutes of the half, making several key saves to keep the deficit at two heading into the break.
Haley converted a penalty stroke in the third quarter to make it 3-0.
Following Haley's second goal, the Monks continued to make life tough for the Beavers, preventing Farmington from getting a shot in the second half.
