Beavers Down Owls in NAC Battle

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine The University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team controlled possession and tempo from the opening kickoff and defeated the University of Maine at Presque Isle, 3-0, in an early-season North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup on Saturday.

The Records

With the win, the Beavers improved to 3-2-1 overall and 2-0-0 in NAC play. The Owls fell to 2-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference.

How It Happened

Despite dominating possession early, UMaine-Farmington was kept off the scoreboard until the 31st minute. First-year forward Vishal Mellor (Union, Maine) tallied his second goal of the season after pouncing on a loose ball in the box. UMPI goalkeeper Brett Senal deflected a cross from Monte Weaver (Surry, Maine), but the rebound fell directly to Mellor, who buried it into the open net for a 1-0 lead.

The Beavers maintained their one-goal advantage deep into the second half while continuing to apply steady pressure. In the 79th minute, sophomore midfielder JJ Greenlaw (Farmington, Maine) doubled the lead with a penalty kick—his second goal of the year. The opportunity was set up by first-year Owen Spera (Gorham, Maine), who was taken down from behind in the box after slipping past the Owl defense.

Farmington added an insurance goal in the 90th minute when senior defender Arden Weaver (Surry, Maine) ripped a low, driven shot into the bottom right corner. The ball had deflected off an Owl center back before falling perfectly into Weaver's path.
