FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team fell 5-1 to Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Leib Field.
How It Happened
The Leopards jumped out to an early lead, taking a 1-0 advantage in the ninth minute when Brianna Reid lofted a long cross into the penalty area that found the head of Lily Carlson, who directed the ball into the back of the net.
After Carlson's opener, neither team generated much pressure until the 23rd minute, when the Leopards earned a series of corner kicks that produced several scoring chances. One of those chances forced UMF senior goalkeeper
Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine) to make a diving save on a shot from Emily Hagen.
Wentworth doubled its lead in the 29th minute when Lina Arlander muscled her way to win a 50-50 ball before finishing into the net. Katie McTighe was credited with the assist.
The score remained 2-0 into the second half, when UMF pulled one back. A through ball sent
Natalie Tracy (Oakland, Maine) in behind the defense. Leopard goalkeeper Shyla Kulesza came off her line to close down the angle, but as she dove to challenge, she tripped Tracy in the penalty area. Awarded a penalty kick, Tracy calmly buried a right-footed shot past Kulesza to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
Farmington's momentum was short-lived, as Hagen headed home off a corner from Reid in the 60th minute to restore Wentworth's two-goal cushion.
Brooke Finlay and Bryce Bateman added goals in the 70th and 84th minutes to secure the 5-1 victory for the Leopards, their third win of the young season.
