Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Beavers Surge Past Cobleskill Behind Huge 2nd Half

COBLESKILL, New York – After trailing for most of the first half and facing an eight-point deficit to open the second half, the University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team outscored SUNY Cobleskill 42-18 after halftime en route to a 65-49 win.

The Records:

Farmington picked up its seventh straight victory, improving to 12-3 overall and 10-1 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action. Cobleskill dropped to 7-8 overall and 5-6 in NAC play following the loss.

How it Happened:

The Beavers struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the opening half as the Fighting Tigers limited Farmington's transition opportunities and forced the game into mostly half-court sets.

The first quarter was highly competitive, with neither team leading by more than three points as the Fighting Tigers held a 12-11 edge after the opening 10 minutes.

Cobleskill scored the first six points of the second quarter, getting layups from Hannah Bonczkowski, Mady Victorin, and Sydney Delisle to open up a seven-point lead.

As Cobleskill began to find its footing offensively, the Beavers were unable to get shots to fall, shooting just 2-of-8 from the floor and missing both free-throw attempts in the first five minutes of the second quarter. Consecutive three-pointers from Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) and Makayla Emerson (Bradley, Maine) helped right the ship for Farmington, pulling the Beavers within four inside the final four minutes of the half.

A pair of layups from Zaylee Ramos, followed by two free throws from Kyara Triblet, put the Fighting Tigers up 10 heading into the final minute of the first half. Emerson made a strong move to the basket and converted a layup in the closing seconds to make it 31-23 at the intermission.

Momentum completely shifted in the opening minutes of the third quarter as Farmington began to speed the game up and generate easier scoring opportunities.

The Beavers opened the half on a 9-2 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) that pulled Farmington within one with 5:25 remaining in the third quarter.

Cobleskill settled down and matched the Beavers basket for basket, maintaining a narrow lead until the final minute of the period. Dow, who took over in the second half, knocked down two free throws to pull Farmington within one. She then grabbed a rebound on the defensive end and found a streaking Emerson for an easy layup, giving the Beavers a lead they would not relinquish.

Cobleskill hung around early in the fourth quarter, with Farmington holding a 48-45 advantage with 6:30 remaining. The Beavers closed the game on a decisive 17-4 run to pull away and secure the come-from-behind victory.

Dow scored 17 of her game-high 24 points in the second half, including 10 in the fourth quarter, to lead the Beavers.
