LEWISTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team was unable to hang with the No. 14 ranked team in the country, Bates College, on Wednesday evening, dropping a non-conference road contest, 90-48.
The Records:
The loss for the Beavers snapped a seven-game win streak, moving them to 12-4 on the season. Bates has now won nine of its last ten and improved to 15-2 following the victory.
How it Happened:
Bates wasted no time taking control of the game, doing so seemingly from the opening tip. After a pair of offensive rebounds on the opening possession, Sophie Spolter came off a ball screen and confidently stepped into a pull-up midrange jumper, and the Bobcats were off and running. Bates rattled off a quick 23-4 run in the first 5:12 of action. Sarah Hughes scored eight of those points, connecting on a pair of threes to spark the Bobcats' run.
Bates was clicking on all cylinders in the opening quarter, shooting 13-for-28 from the floor while corralling nine offensive rebounds, leading to 12 second-chance points. Bates also forced eight Farmington turnovers in the quarter that resulted in 14 points at the other end.
Farmington was led by sophomore guard Makayla Emerson (Bradley, Maine) in the first quarter, helping to steady the offense. Emerson came off the bench and scored seven quick points, including drilling a three to help the Beavers hang around.
Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine) canned a deep three on the opening possession of the second quarter for the Beavers to make it a 31-16 game. Following Mayo's three, Bates answered with a 21-5 spurt that put them up by 31. Lily Brown hit consecutive threes, while Clair Gaetani and Hughes also added threes during the Bates run.
Clinging to a 57-24 lead to open the second half, the third quarter was more of the same as Bates extended its lead to as much as 42 points in the quarter to put the game away.
First-year guard Ella Rice scored seven points in the fourth quarter, hitting a three and going a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line.
The Bobcats wreaked havoc on the defensive end of the floor all night, making life especially difficult for the Beavers. In total, Bates forced 28 Farmington turnovers and scored 37 points off those miscues. Bates also did damage on the offensive glass, grabbing 24 offensive rebounds that led to 27 second-chance points.
