FARMINGTON, Maine - After an evenly played first quarter, the University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team found another gear and dispatched Lesley University, 66-37, on Friday evening in Dearborn Gymnasium in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action.
The Records:
The Beavers moved to 14-5 overall with the win and are now 12-2 in NAC play. Lesley fell to 2-16 overall and 1-12 in conference action.
How it Happened:
The first quarter saw back-and-forth action, with the Beavers leading by as many as six points. A pair of three-pointers from Savannah Gravitt and one from Leila Chisholm kept the Lynx within striking distance.
As has been the calling card for the Beavers throughout the season, Farmington upped the defensive pressure in the second quarter, swinging momentum completely in its favor. After forcing five turnovers in the opening quarter, the Beavers forced seven more in the second, allowing them to get out in transition and score easy buckets at the rim, which in turn opened things up beyond the arc.
Junior forward Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) and first-year Kytana Williamson (Nobleboro, Maine) each recorded a pair of steals in the quarter. Dow finished with five points, while Williamson added four. Junior guard Audrey Mackie (South Thomaston, Maine) was the beneficiary of two of Grace Dwyer's (Manchester, Maine) four second-quarter assists, knocking down a pair of triples as Farmington outscored the Lynx 22-10 and took a 37-23 lead into halftime.
The Beavers completely busted the game open in the third quarter. Dow opened the frame with a three-point play the old-fashioned way, and Farmington was off and running. Mackie continued her hot shooting, connecting on all three of her shot attempts in the quarter, while Dow added five more points as part of an 18-3 run to open the half, giving the Beavers a 29-point advantage.
An offensive rebound and putback at the buzzer from Williamson capped a quarter in which Farmington outscored Lesley 22-5 to put the game away, completing the season sweep of the Lynx.
