Late Strike Downs Beavers

FARMINGTON, Maine — The University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking late loss to Maine Maritime Academy, 1-0, in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at Leib Field. Maine Maritime broke a scoreless deadlock in the final seconds of regulation to claim the victory.

The Records

Farmington moved to 0-13-2 overall following the loss, while Maine Maritime improved to 9-5-0 on the season.

How it Happened

Both teams battled through a defensive opening half. Maine Maritime applied early pressure with multiple shots, but Farmington goalkeeper Roo Sawyer (Londonderry, N.H.) turned away three first-half shots to keep the Mariners off the board. Farmington had chances of its own, including a pair of shots on goal by Rita Benoit (Hallowell, Maine), but Maine Maritime goalkeeper Mayako Brown stopped both to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.

The Beavers also looked to have an opportunity for a first half strike when a loose ball squirted away from Brown, but she was able to regain control before first-year forward Vivian Bishop (North Rose, N.Y.) was able to get there to keep the game scoreless.

The physical play and tight defense continued into the second half. Farmington created quality offensive opportunities with shots on goal from Halle Clifford (Blue Hill, Maine), Bishop, and Emma Dunn (Farmington, Maine), but Maine Maritime netminder Cora Brewster, who took over at halftime, turned each one aside. Sawyer continued her strong play in goal for the Beavers, recording two more saves in the second half as time ticked down.

Just when the match appeared destined for a scoreless draw, Maine Maritime struck in dramatic fashion. With just 11 seconds remaining in regulation (89:49), Natalee Orr found the back, lofting a long range shot over the head of Sawyer and into the left side pocket of the net to hand the Mariners a 1-0 lead and secure the win. Mya Engberg was credited with the assist on the goal from Orr.
