Men’s Golf Places 7th in NAC Pre-Championship Poll

WATERVILLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's golf team was picked to finish seventh by the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) coaches heading into this weekend's NAC Golf Championship. This year's event will be hosted by Husson University at Bangor Municipal Golf Course.

Farmington will look to work its way up the standings this season after placing seventh a year ago. Farmington finished the two-day, 36-hole event 154-over par, with its top four scorers combining to shoot 714 for the event.

This year, the event will once again consist of eight institutions: Farmington, Husson, SUNY Delhi, SUNY Cobleskill, Lesley, VTSU Johnson, UMaine-Presque Isle, and Maine Maritime.

A year ago, SUNY Delhi squeaked out the championship title after shooting 43-over par across the two-day event, topping Husson University by eight strokes. In this year's poll, Husson earned the top spot, receiving six first-place votes, while Delhi was picked to place second after receiving a pair of first-place votes.

Three of the five golfers in Farmington's lineup this weekend competed in last year's NAC Championship: sophomores Caleb Harvey (Bath, Maine) and Gage Suitter (Bath, Maine), as well as junior Trent Beaudoin (Farmington, Maine). First-years Sam Binette (South Paris, Maine) and Ben Wrigley (Farmington, Maine) will get their first taste of championship golf.

Harvey placed 15th at last year's championship, finishing with an 80 on both days, good for a 20-over par 160 over 36 holes. Harvey has served as the Beavers' number one golfer all season long. Through seven individual events this season, Harvey is averaging just over 79 strokes per 18 holes. His lowest round of the season came just this past Sunday, when he shot three-over par with a 75 at the Husky Classic en route to tying for ninth place.

Suitter has also played in each event this season, with his best finish coming at the Colby Invitational, where he tied for fifth place after shooting five-over par with a 75. Suitter's 18-hole average through the seven events this season was 85.29. Suitter placed 34th in last year's event, shooting 47-over par across the two days.

Beaudoin has been consistent for the Beavers this season, averaging 86.67 strokes per 18 holes through six events. Beaudoin's best two rounds of the season came on back-to-back days, shooting a pair of 82s at the UMF and Colby Invitationals. Beaudoin tied for 22nd at the UMF Invitational and tied for 29th at the Colby Invitational. Beaudoin placed 37th at last year's championship, shooting 56-over par.

Binette has been a mainstay in the lineup this season for the Beavers, competing in five of the seven individual events. Binette has consistently shot in the low to mid-80s in every round this season, with his best round being an 82 and his highest round being an 86. Binette averaged 84 strokes per 18 holes for the season.

Wrigley will serve as the number five golfer this weekend for Farmington, having played in four individual events this season. Wrigley will look to repeat the success he had earlier this season at Bangor Municipal, where he shot a season-low 81 at the Husson Invitational. Wrigley tied for 32nd overall in the event.

The first round of the championship will begin on Friday morning, with the first tee time scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Farmington will be in the last grouping and is not slated to tee off until 11:40 a.m. Day two on Saturday will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the groupings determined based on team placement from day one.
