UMF Swept in Season-Opening Doubleheader at Colby

Written by; Aaron Goschke '25

WATERVILLE, Maine
– The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team opened the 2026 season with a pair of losses on Saturday afternoon, falling 14–1 in the opener before dropping a tightly contested 4–0 decision to Colby at Coombs Field.

Game 1 – Colby 14, UMF 1

Colby built momentum early in the opener, scoring six runs in the second inning and adding six more in the third to establish an early advantage. The Mules capitalized on traffic on the bases and applied steady pressure to extend the lead.

UMF starter Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) worked 2.1 innings and was credited with the loss, while the Beavers leaned on the bullpen to bridge the remainder of the game. Ryan Clark (Kennebunk, Maine) turned in a clean inning in relief, with Connor Harty (Lewisboro, N.Y.) and Trent Holman (Dixfield, Maine) providing additional stability.

At the plate, UMF collected five hits, paced by Tyler Rosa (Morgan Hill, CA) and Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.), who each recorded two-hit performances. Parsell drove in the Beavers' lone run with an RBI single in the seventh inning. Colby finished with 13 hits and eight walks, closing out a 14–1 result.

Game 2 – Colby 4, UMF 0

The second game was far more competitive, as UMF pitching kept the Mules in check early and gave the Beavers a chance to stay within striking distance. Max Bryan (Walpole, Mass.) started and went four innings, allowing three runs on eight hits while limiting further damage.

Colby opened the scoring in the second inning and added two runs in the fourth to extend the lead. The Mules added another run in the fifth after Gabe Philbrick (Florence, MT) ran into traffic, but Kaleb Hussey (Topsham, Maine) was called upon and escaped a big jam with a strike-'em-out, throw-'em-out double play, as Hayden Durrell (Madrid, Maine) cut down a runner at third to end the inning. Brady Vincent (Auburn, Maine) followed with a clean sixth inning to keep the deficit at four.

UMF's best scoring opportunity came in the fourth, when the Beavers loaded the bases with one out on singles from Jameson Bloch and Brady Vincent, but Colby escaped the jam with a double play. Bloch, Vincent, and Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) accounted for UMF's three hits, but Colby starter Keeler Vogt was dominant, striking out seven over five scoreless innings to earn the win as UMF was shut out, 4–0

The Beavers are back in action next Saturday, March 7, when they travel to Brunswick to take on the Bowdoin Polar Bears.
