GORHAM, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team was unable to keep up with the quick-strike offense of the University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon, dropping a non-conference battle at Hannaford Field in Gorham, 18-5.
The Records:
Following the loss, the Beavers dropped to 1-3 in the early season while the Huskies now sit at 4-1.
How it Happened:
The Beavers were the first team to crack the scoreboard, doing so just four and a half minutes into the game thanks to an unassisted tally from senior Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine).
The Beavers' lead lasted for eight minutes as Katelyn D'Appolonia got the Huskies on the scoreboard for the first time, notching her tenth goal of the season. The goal from D'Appolonia opened the floodgates for USM as the Huskies rattled off four more goals from three different players in a minute and a half of game time to open up a 5-1 lead heading into the second quarter. Mariam DeLisle was credited with two of the four goals while Cierra Hill and D'Appolonia each added goals of their own.
The Huskies scored two more goals in the second quarter, getting the hat-trick tally from DeLisle and a single goal from Eliza Pattershall to take a 7-1 lead into halftime.
The Huskies struck again just 48 seconds into the third quarter as Ella Burnell scored a goal on the man advantage. Anna Byers and D'Appolonia scored goals just 19 seconds apart moments later to cap off Southern Maine's ten unanswered goals, taking a 10-1 advantage.
McMinis was able to put an end to Farmington's scoring drought, registering her second unassisted goal with 9:24 left to play in the third quarter.
After a Sam Poulin goal for Southern Maine, Farmington scored three goals in three minutes and ten seconds to make it an 11-5 game. All three goals were on the man advantage as Emma Dunn (Farmington, Maine), Erin Gould (Lebanon, N.H.), and McMinis scored for the Beavers.
The Huskies responded by scoring the next seven goals to close out the victory on Saturday afternoon.
