HENNIKER, New Hampshire - New England College scored the first eight goals of the game on Wednesday evening and never looked back, taking down the University of Maine at Farmington, 12-4, in non-conference women's lacrosse action.
The Records:
Farmington dropped to 1-4 overall following the loss, while the Pilgrims stayed unbeaten, moving to 6-0 with the victory.
How it Happened:
NEC scored four goals in both the first and second quarters to take an 8-0 lead and never looked back. Alexis Hornsby got the scoring started just 1:41 into the game, tallying two goals in the opening quarter.
Carmela Goodwin followed up Hornsby's goal with an unassisted tally of her own just 21 seconds later to put the Pilgrims up two just over two minutes into the game.
Riley Davis added a goal of her own, and Hornsby's second tally with 6:50 left in the first quarter gave the Pilgrims a 4-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
The offense continued to roll for NEC to start the second quarter as Meadow Gilchrist scored her 20th goal of the season with 10:49 left to make it a 5-0 game. Mackenzie McDonald then scored three straight goals over a span of 3:59 as the lead swelled to 8-0.
The Beavers found an answer as first-year midfielder
Bree Griffin (Wilton, Maine) found the back of the net off a feed from
Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) with 18 seconds left before halftime.
Leading 8-1 entering the third quarter, NEC continued to apply pressure, scoring the first three goals of the half to open up a 10-goal advantage. Gilchrist scored a pair, sandwiching McDonald's fourth goal that made it 11-1 with 6:20 left in the third quarter.
Farmington's offense started to break out in the fourth quarter, scoring the first three goals of the frame. McMinis,
Miah Coffin (Otis, Maine), and Griffin all scored for Farmington, which cut the deficit to 11-4 with just over a minute to play.
Gilchrist tacked on her fourth goal of the contest just 15 seconds after Griffin's goal to complete the scoring and make it a 12-4 final.

Skye Cotnoir (West Gardiner, Maine) was fantastic in net for the Beavers, making a season-high 15 saves in the hard-fought loss.
