Beavers and Owls Split for 2nd Straight Day

FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington (7-14, 4-2) and the University of Maine at Presque Isle (6-15, 5-11) baseball teams battled to a doubleheader split for the second consecutive day on Sunday in games three and four of their weekend series at Hippach Field. Farmington earned the win in game one, 6-3, before UMPI took game two, 4-0.

Game One; Farmington 6 - Presque Isle 3

Both teams were held scoreless in the first, but the Owls were able to get on the scoreboard first in the top half of the second. A one-out single from Garrett Chadwick, a hit by pitch, and a walk loaded the bases for Aiden Toy. Toy did his job, lifting a fly ball deep enough to left field to allow Chadwick to score and make it 1-0.

Farmington's bats got going in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs to take the lead for the first time. Matt Marquis (Monmouth, Maine) was hit by a pitch to start the rally. After Marquis stole second, he moved over to third on a Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) single to put runners at the corners with one out. The next batter, Colby Lewis (Blue Hill, Maine), ripped a double that scored both Marquis and Parsell. Lewis then moved to third on an error. Jackson Murray (Bath, Maine) followed with a SAC fly that made it 3-1.

Lewis delivered a second two-run knock in the bottom of the third, ripping a single to center field to score Camden Cook (Littleton, N.H.) and Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.), making it 5-1 Farmington.

Chadwick led off the fourth inning with a single and then came around to score on a double to left field off the bat of Brock Black, pulling UMPI within three at 5-2.

Farmington wasted no time getting the run back in the bottom half of the fourth. Ike Wrigley (Farmington, Maine) led off with a single and moved to second on an error. Wrigley scored two batters later on an RBI single from Bloch.

The Owls made things interesting in the top of the seventh. Toy reached base on an error to lead off the inning. After a fielder's choice, Ronnie Golmon was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with one out. Hector Perez followed with an RBI single that made it a 6-3 game. After a groundout, Diego Maldonado was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two down, but Farmington first-year pitcher Max Bryan (Walpole, Mass.) got Chadwick to pop out to end the game.

Game Two; Presque Isle 4 - Farmington 0

Farmington's offense was stymied by Chadwick in game two, mustering just three hits—all singles—in the 4-0 loss.

The Beavers got a strong start from first-year William Buchholz (Maynard, Mass.), who did not allow an earned run and struck out a career-best seven in seven innings of work.

The Owls got on the scoreboard in the top of the second, taking advantage of a two-out Farmington error. Black led off the inning by reaching on a hit by pitch. Buchholz retired the next two batters he faced, but after Toy reached on the error, Mason Long made the Beavers pay with a two-run single to right.

The Owls tacked on another run in the top of the third, once again capitalizing on two-out defensive miscues. Mitchell Kley doubled to right with one out, moved to third on a groundout, and then scored as Black reached on an error to make it 3-0.

Farmington's best opportunity to score came in the bottom half of the second. Parsell ripped a one-out single to center and then moved to second on a SAC bunt from Murray, putting a runner in scoring position for Wrigley. Wrigley delivered with a single, but Parsell was gunned down at the plate to end the inning.

UMPI added an insurance run in the top of the sixth as Perez singled home Golmon to make it a 4-0 game.

Farmington threatened in the bottom of the seventh, using two hit-by-pitches and a Lucas Harmon (Monmouth, Maine) single to load the bases with two away. Chadwick induced a flyout to center to end the threat and close out the victory for the Owls.
