CASTLETON, Vermont - The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team mounted an early first-quarter advantage but was unable to hold on, dropping a non-conference contest on the road against VTSU Castleton, 15-12, on Thursday afternoon.
The Records:
The loss for the Beavers moved them to 3-9 on the season, while Castleton is now 6-8 following the win.
How it Happened:
Farmington came out quickly as Bree Griffin (Wilton, Maine) put the Beavers in front just a minute and 38 seconds into the opening quarter with her sixth goal of the season. Ally Trefsger (South Portland, Maine) was credited with the assist on Griffin's goal.
Five minutes later, senior attacker Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) doubled the Beavers' advantage, picking up her 28th goal of the season.
Phoebe Loomis had the answer for Castleton, scoring her first of five goals nearly four minutes later to put the Spartans on the board for the first time. The goal from Loomis sparked a 4-0 run by Castleton as they took a 4-2 lead midway through the second quarter. Renny Cota scored a pair while Halle Christian added a goal during the run for Castleton.
Farmington junior midfielder Emma Dunn (Farmington, Maine) put an end to the Castleton surge momentarily, scoring an unassisted goal with 8:42 left in the quarter. The Spartans responded by ripping off the next three goals to take their biggest lead of the opening half, 7-3. Lanza Bellomo, Loomis, and Megan Culp were each credited with a goal during the stretch for Castleton.
McMinis' second goal of the game, with just over a minute and a half left to play in the half, pulled Farmington back within three heading into intermission.
The teams traded goals for the first seven and a half minutes of the third quarter as the Spartans continued to cling to a three-goal advantage at 10-7. Renny Cota scored two goals and Bella Gale added a goal of her own during the stretch for Castleton. Farmington got man-advantage goals from Trefsger and Dunn, while McMinis scored an even-strength goal during the stretch.
The goal from Gale was the first of four straight from Castleton over a two-minute and 16-second span as they opened up a 13-7 advantage.
The Beavers found an answer as Dunn found the back of the net to complete her hat trick, and Kylie Delile (Clinton, Maine) scored in the final moments of the quarter to make it a 13-9 game heading into the fourth quarter.
After Loomis' fourth goal of the game two minutes into the fourth quarter, McMinis and Dunn scored to make it 14-11 with just over seven minutes left in the game.
Loomis answered Dunn's goal with one of her own 45 seconds later to halt the Beavers' momentum and put the final touches on the victory. Trefsger scored an unassisted goal with 2:01 left to play, but the Beavers could not get all the way over the hump as Castleton secured the 15-12 win.
