FARMINGTON, Maine - After trailing by as many as four in the opening half, the University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team battled back to tie the game midway through the third quarter but was unable to complete the comeback, falling 12-8 to Husson University on Tuesday afternoon.
The Records:
Farmington dropped to 4-10 overall and is now 2-3 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action following the loss. Husson improved to 9-4 overall and is now 4-1 in conference play after the victory.
How it Happened:
Junior midfielder Emma Dunn (Farmington, Maine) struck early on a free-position shot to put the Beavers up 1-0 just 54 seconds into the game.
Husson responded by scoring the next two goals to take its first lead of the game. An unassisted goal from Laela Martinez at the 8:20 mark, followed by a man-advantage goal from Reese Sullivan at the 3:00 mark, put the Eagles ahead 2-1 after one quarter of play.
First-year midfielder Erin Gould (Lebanon, Maine) scored just 1:16 into the second quarter to knot the game at two. The goal for Gould marked her ninth of the season.
Madison Lower scored a man-advantage goal just under two minutes later, but she was quickly matched by Sadie Harvey (Bethel, Maine), who responded with a goal of her own to tie the game at three.
Husson closed the second quarter by scoring four unanswered goals to take a 7-3 lead into halftime. Kate Boehmcke scored a pair, while Gracie Gardiner and Lower each added a goal for the Eagles.
The Beavers came out of halftime on a mission. Dunn and senior attacker Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) each scored twice during the opening 6:08 of the third quarter to tie the game at seven apiece.
Adella Mabee halted the run for the Eagles, scoring a free-position goal to put Husson back ahead less than a minute after the Beavers had tied the game. Mabee's goal sparked another four-goal run for the Eagles that all but put the game away. Averi Baker, Boehmcke, and Sullivan each scored during the stretch, giving Husson an 11-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
First-year Kylie Delile (Clinton, Maine) scored her fourth goal of the season with 6:45 remaining, but a late goal from Martinez put the finishing touches on Husson's victory.
