Softball Run-Rules Lyndon Twice; DeBoer Tosses Perfect Game in Game Two

LYNDONVILLE, Vermont - The University of Maine at Farmington (9-16, 6-5) softball team got back in the win column on Saturday, securing a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victories on the road over VTSU Lyndon (2-14, 0-10) via the run rule. Farmington earned a 12-1 win in five innings in game one before junior pitcher Emma DeBoer (Saint Leonard, Md.) tossed a five-inning perfect game in the Beavers' 19-0 game two victory.

Game One; Farmington 12 - Lyndon 1

The Beavers wasted no time breaking the game open, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. Senior outfielder Emily Collins (Moscow, Maine) got the rally started with a double to left and then moved to third on a single from Ava Paglianite (Upper Black Eddy, Pa.), putting runners on the corners with one out.

Junior outfielder Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) hit a ball to short that was not fielded cleanly, allowing Collins to score and open the scoring. Paglianite moved to third on the play and later scored on a wild pitch. Dow came around to score on a fielder's choice to make it 3-0. Angelina Ventullo (Salem, N.H.) and Haley Stewart (Cumberland, Maine) capped the inning with back-to-back RBI singles to extend the lead to 5-0.

Farmington's offense was held in check until the top of the fourth when they added three more runs on a three-run home run off the bat of senior third baseman Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine), making it 8-0.

Lyndon made some noise in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of back-to-back walks and an error to load the bases with nobody out. Kazandra Gonzalez hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Riley McNamara to score, making it an 8-1 game. Farmington starting pitcher Natalie Simpson (Bucksport, Maine) struck out the next two batters she faced to escape further trouble.

Farmington scored four times in the top of the fifth, extending the lead to 12-1. After Stewart walked and Collins singled, Dow came up with two outs and ripped a double to left that got through the legs of the left fielder. Stewart and Collins scored easily, and after the ball got past the outfielder, Dow was able to circle the bases to make it 11-1. Pike followed with a single, and Lisa Truchin (Torrance, Calif.) drove her home with an RBI triple to right.

The Hornets went down in order in the bottom of the fifth as the Beavers secured the five-inning victory.

The Beavers had everything working in game two, pounding out a season-high 16 hits, including eight for extra bases, while DeBoer was lights out in the circle, throwing a five-inning perfect game.

Melissa Mayo (Bridgton, Maine) led off the game with a walk and then moved to third as Collins reached base via an error. Mayo scored on a groundout by Skyler Augustine (Brunswick, Maine), giving the Beavers a 1-0 lead just three batters into the game.

Dow followed with a single to left, scoring Collins to make it a 2-0 game. Dow later scored in the inning, taking advantage of a second Lyndon error.

Farmington's offense continued to swing the bats well in the second, scoring five more runs to build an 8-0 lead. Mayo led off the inning with a single and came all the way around to score as the ball got past the right fielder. Collins followed with a similar play, singling to center before the ball got past the outfielder, allowing her to reach third. She scored in the next at-bat as Augustine hit a sac fly to left.

Later in the inning, first-year Kytana Williamson (Nobleboro, Maine) drove in a run with an RBI double to right. The next batter, Skye Chandler (New Gloucester, Maine), hit a grounder in front of the plate that was thrown away by the catcher, allowing two more Farmington runs to score and make it 8-0.

Farmington added a run in the third as Augustine ripped a double to left and later scored on an RBI double from Pike.

The Beavers put the game away with five runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to make it 19-0. Mayo hit an RBI single, Dow added a two-run double, and Pike delivered a two-RBI single in the fourth to make it 14-0 through three and a half innings.

Mayo stayed hot in the fifth, doubling home a run before later scoring on an error. Dow continued her strong day with another RBI double. Pike followed with an RBI double of her own as the Beavers continued to add on. Bella Miller (Lewiston, Maine) capped the scoring with an RBI double that brought home Dow.
