Women’s Lacrosse Falters in Back-and-Forth Battle at Thomas

WATERVILLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's lacrosse team mounted an early advantage but was unable to hold on, dropping a seesaw battle with Thomas College, 11-10. The game was a non-conference contest between the two North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opponents.

The Records:

The loss for the Beavers moved them to 3-7 on the season, while the Terriers improved to 3-4 with the victory.

How it Happened:

The Beavers mounted an early advantage, scoring three goals in the opening 10 minutes of play to take a quick 3-0 lead. Senior attacker Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) scored the first two goals of the game just a minute and 17 seconds apart. Fellow senior Ally Trefsger (South Portland, Maine) added the Beavers' third goal at the 5:05 mark. Emma Dunn (Farmington, Maine) was credited with two assists, while Lauren Girouard (Concord, Vt.) added one during Farmington's game-opening run.

Thomas got on the scoreboard for the first time when Sadie Dorr found the back of the net with 1:12 left in the opening quarter, making it 3-1 heading into the second.

McMinis scored her third goal of the game and made it a 4-1 contest just 61 seconds into the second quarter. Katarina Olvera responded with a goal of her own off a feed from Isabella Pelletier two and a half minutes later.

Goals from first-year Erin Gould (Lebanon, Maine) and McMinis, scored just a minute and 32 seconds apart, gave Farmington a 6-2 advantage—its largest lead of the game—with 9:14 remaining in the half.

Karissa Cotoia scored just 19 seconds after McMinis' fourth goal, sparking a three-goal run for the Terriers, who went into halftime trailing by one, 6-5. Pelletier netted two of those goals, scoring 53 seconds apart in the closing minutes of the second quarter.

The opening 8:38 of the third quarter were scoreless until Olvera tied the game at six with a shot into the back of the net.

Dunn scored her first goal of the game at the 4:25 mark of the third, an unassisted tally that helped the Beavers regain a one-goal advantage.

The game headed into the fourth quarter tied at seven after Dorr finished a feed from Olvera to even the score.

The fourth quarter was an intense back-and-forth battle. Cotoia gave Thomas its first lead of the game just 15 seconds into the quarter. The lead doubled two minutes and 27 seconds later as Cotoia found a cutting Emily Gower, who finished to make it a 9-7 game with 12:18 remaining.

Dunn answered for the Beavers, scoring her second and third goals of the game two minutes apart to tie the contest. Her second goal came during a man advantage, while her third came on a free-position shot.

Jorgie Aduini quickly responded with a goal of her own just 38 seconds after Dunn tied the game at nine.

The Beavers answered again, as Trefsger scored her second goal of the game just inside the five-minute mark on a man advantage to tie the game at 10.

Dorr completed the hat trick and secured the victory with an unassisted goal with 2:07 remaining after Amber Boardman made a key save on a McMinis shot that would have given the Beavers the lead.
