Thomas Scores Two Late to Top Farmington in NAC Opener

WATERVILLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team held a pair of one-goal advantages during the opening half of play, but was unable to secure the lead as Thomas College scored three unanswered goals and pulled away with a 4-2 victory over the Beavers on Friday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Smith Field.

The Records:

Farmington moved to 0-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in NAC play following the loss. Thomas improved to 2-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play.

How it Happened:

The Beavers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of action. Sophomore forward Owen Spera (Gorham, Maine) found the back of the net, heading home a cross from Star Boma (Caribou, Maine), giving Farmington the early advantage.
Thomas answered in the 18th minute as David Ivarsson knotted the game up at one with his first goal of the afternoon. Cody Robinson and Tre Burgess were credited with assists on the play.

Farmington quickly regained its lead just over five and a half minutes later when JJ Greenlaw (Farmington, Maine) scored his first goal of the season, a left-footed strike from nearly 30 yards out that tucked into the left corner of the net. Oscar Davis (Scarborough,Maine) provided the assist, dumping off a short-ranged pass to Greenlaw.

The Terriers once again responded quickly, retying the game in the 29th minute. Robinson found the back of the net, cleaning up a pass that made it across the goal mouth and easily redirecting it into the back of the net. Daud Abdi and Maxwell Gilbert picked up the assists on the goal that made it a 2-2 game heading into halftime.

The second half remained scoreless for more than 36 minutes as both teams battled for control. Farmington generated several scoring opportunities, but Thomas goalkeeper Jamie Fischer turned aside four shots during the half to keep the game tied.

Thomas finally broke through in the 82nd minute, scoring a pair of goals just 38 seconds apart to open up the two goal advantage. Andrew Hodgins scored the first goal off assists from Gustav Franzen and Brynjar Johannsson, giving the Terriers their first lead of the afternoon.

Jeremiah Gomez added the insurance goal for Thomas, finding the back of the net unassisted to make it a 4-2 game.

The Beavers continued to push for a late comeback, but Fischer made two more saves in the closing minutes to preserve the Thomas victory.

The Goalkeepers:

Parker Day made eight saves in the hard-fought loss for the Beavers. Jamie Fischer made eight saves in goal for the Terriers to earn the victory.

The Beavers will return to action on Sunday when they host the University of New England. Game time is set for 1:00 PM at Leib Field.
