Pilgrims Slip Past Beavers, 1-0

HENNIKER, N.H. - After a scoreless opening half of action the New England College women's soccer team was able to break the tie with an early second half goal and went on to top the University of Maine at Farmington 1-0 in a non-conference battle at Don Melander Field.

Farmington fell to 0-4-0 overall following the loss, while New England improved to 3-1-1 on the season.

How it Happened:

The Pilgrims tested Farmington goalkeeper Roo Sawyer (Londonderry, N.H.) early and often, but Sawyer turned aside a pair of shots during the opening six and a half minutes of play to keep the game scoreless.

Farmington generated a pair of corner kicks in quick succession during the 14th minute, registering their first real scoring threat of the game.

Following the two Beaver corners, a quick counter attack from the Pilgrims led to a Michelina Follis shot that struck the post and was cleared away to keep the game scoreless.

NEC held a 10-4 advantage in shots after the first half, but the Beavers were able to hold a substantial 5-2 advantage in corner kicks during the opening 45 minutes of play.

The Pilgrims finally broke through in the 57th minute when Grace Houde scored, converting a pass from Aubrey Thomas to give New England a 1-0 advantage.

Farmington responded by generating several scoring opportunities as they pushed for the equalizer.
