Men’s Soccer Falls Short at Wentworth

BOSTON, Massachusetts - The University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team was unable to overcome a five-goal first-half deficit as Wentworth Institute of Technology pulled away for a 6-0 victory over the Beavers on Wednesday evening at Sweeney Field.

The Records:


Farmington moved to 0-4-1 overall  following the loss. Wentworth improved their record to 3-2-1 with the win.

How it Happened:


Wentworth wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, scoring twice in the opening two and a half minutes of action. Adrian Munoz opened the scoring with a goal at 2:12 of the opening half off an assist from David Lemus.

Munoz struck again just 18 seconds later, quickly giving the Leopards a 2-0 advantage. Younes Henniche was credited with the assist on the play.


Wentworth continued to put pressure on Farmington's defense and extended its lead in the 28th minute when Vinny Detrone found the back of the net off an assist from Munoz, making it a 3-0 game.


The goal from Detrone was the first of three over a five and a half minute stretch that pushed Wentworth's lead up to five. Connor Bishop scored the Leopard's fourth of the game off an assist from Parker Cheyne. Detrone once again found the back of the net, this time in the 34th minute, as Cheyne was credited with the assist, his second of the evening helping the Leopards take a 5-0 lead into halftime.


After just three shots, one of which was on frame during the opening 45 minutes of action, Farmington was able to up their offensive pressure early in the second half, including shots from JJ Greenlaw (Farmington, Maine), Jack Luciano (Gorham, Maine), Fred Coit (Blue Hill, Maine) and Owen Spera (Gorham, Maine), but Wentworth goalkeeper Adrian Sanchez turned aside each of the Beavers' attempts on goal.


Wentworth added its sixth and final goal in the 61st minute when Adrian Malvido scored off an assist from Shane Byrne, making it a 6-0 game and put the finishing touches on the victory,

The Goalkeepers:

Hunter Frost (Monmouth, Maine) made six saves during the opening half for the Beavers, while Will DiLella (Farmington, Conn.) made two saves in the second half. Kieran Gorgenyi and Adrian Sanchez combined for the shutout in goal for Wentworth, with Gorgenyi making one save in the first half and Sanchez turning aside three shots in the second half.
