Beavers Earns 2nd Victory of the Season, Top UMass Boston, 5-3

BOSTON, Mass - The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team picked up their second win of the season, earning a 5-3 victory over UMass Boston on the road on Friday afternoon.

The Beavers scored four goals in the first half and picked up an insurance goal in the 52nd minutes to help secure the win over the Beacons.

The Records:

Farmington improved to 2-5 on the season following the victory. UMass Boston fell to 0-5 on the season.

How it Happened:

The Beavers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, taking an early 1-0 lead just 3:25 into the opening quarter. Mikayla Wilcox (Farmington, Maine) scored her second goal of the season off a feed from Izzy Derosby (Waterville, Maine), giving Farmington the early advantage.

UMass Boston answered less than a minute later when Alexis D'Angelo found the back of the cage at the 4:02 mark to even the game at one.

Farmington quickly regained the lead when Bayley Casavant (Corinth, Maine) converted a penalty stroke at 7:38, putting the Beavers ahead 2-1.

The Beavers added to their lead just 1:35 later when Ashley Merchant (Lebanon, Maine) muscled home a rebound after Beacon goalkeeper Jenna Smolinski made an initial save on a point blank shot from Wilcox. The goal for Merchant was the first of her collegiate career and gave the Beavers a 3-1 lead heading into the second quarter.

Farmington continued to apply offensive pressure in the second quarter and extended its lead to three when
Gabby Vincentsen (Bristol, Maine) converted a penalty stroke at the 19:10 mark. The Beavers carried a 4-1 advantage into halftime.

UMass Boston chipped away at the deficit in the third quarter when Kayla Mullin scored off an assist from Meghan Krockta at 40:50, cutting Farmington's lead to 4-2 heading into the final quarter.

The Beacons continued their comeback attempt early in the fourth quarter when D'Angelo scored her second goal of the afternoon off a feed from Molly Fote at 48:10, making it a 4-3 game.

Farmington responded just over three minutes when Merchant scored her second goal of the afternoon at 51:47, to supply the insurance. Wilcox was credited with her second assist of the game on the goal from Merchant.

The Goalkeepers:

Abigail Herlihy (Nashua, N.H.) started in goal for the Beavers and played all 60 minutes, making two saves while allowing three goals. Smolinski made two saves while allowing four goals over the opening 30 minutes for UMass Boston, while Elizabeth Crowley made five saves and allowed one goal over the final 30 minutes
