Big Second Half Pushes Mariners Past Beavers

CASTINE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team battled Maine Maritime through a scoreless opening half, but the Mariners erupted for four second-half goals to secure a 4-0 victory over the Beavers on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Ritchie Field.

The Records:

Farmington moved to 0-5-1 overall and 0-2-0 in NAC play following the loss. Maine Maritime improved to 1-3-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play with the victory.

How it Happened:

The Beavers came out aggressively in the opening half, generating several scoring opportunities while holding Maine Maritime off the scoreboard. Farmington recorded seven shots during the opening 45 minutes, including three shots on goal.

Sophomore forward Owen Spera (Gorham, Maine) led the Beavers' offensive attack in the first half, registering four shots, including two on goal. 

Maine Maritime also generated several shots in the opening half, but Parker Day (Brentwood, N.H.) kept the Mariners off the scoreboard registering one save on the lone shot on target. 

The Mariners broke through just over six minutes into the second half when Mason Quiet found the back of the net in the 52nd minute. James Baur was credited with the assist, giving Maine Maritime a 1-0 advantage.

Maine Maritime doubled its lead less than five minutes later when Garrison Fisher converted a penalty kick in the 56th minute after Farmington was issued a yellow card in the box.

Fisher struck again in the 65th minute, scoring his second goal of the afternoon off an assist from Dillon Wilkinson, extending the Mariners' lead to 3-0.

Maine Maritime added its fourth and final goal in the 84th minute when Baur found the back of the net to cap the scoring.
Farmington registered five shots during the second half of play, just one of which was on frame.

The Goalkeepers:

Day made five saves in the loss for the Beavers. Reagan Moynihan made three saves for Maine Maritime to earn the shutout victory.

The Beavers will return to action on Tuesday afternoon, playing host to Fisher College. Game time Tuesday is set for 3:30 PM.
