Men's Soccer Wins Second in as Many Day, Tops Castleton, 2-0

FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team scored once in each half and secured a 2-0 victory over Vermont State University Castleton in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at Leib Field.

The Records:

Farmington moved to 2-6-1 overall while Vermont State Castleton fell to 1-6-2 overall.

How it Happened:

The Beavers controlled much of the opening half, and nearly broke through in the 16th minute when Jack Luciano (Gorham, Maine) sent a header toward goal that struck the crossbar.

Farmington continued to pressure the Vermont State Castleton defense and was rewarded in the 38th minute when Reed Pambianco (Blue Hill, Maine) scored his first goal of the season. Owen Spera (Gorham, Maine) had a pair of point blank shots turned aside, the second of which was cleared off the goal line by Holden Crouthamel. Pambianco cleaned up the rebound and found the back of the net to give the Beavers a 1-0 advantage.

The Spartans created an opportunity in the closing minutes of the opening half, but Farmington goalkeeper Parker Day (Brentwood, N.H.) made a save on Nate Lurie's shot to preserve the Beavers' one-goal advantage heading into halftime.

Farmington continued to hold the momentum in the second half as Day made a pair of saves during the opening eight minutes to keep Castleton off the scoreboard.

The Beavers extended their lead in the 76th minute when Luciano scored his second goal of the season. Luciano finished off a play set up by Monte Weaver and JJ Greenlaw, as Greenlaw sent a long throw-in into the box that was flick on by Weaver before one-timed into the net by Luciano.

Castleton continued to push forward during the final 15 minutes, but the Farmington defense and Day kept the Spartans off the scoreboard. Day made two additional saves during the final five minutes, including a stop on a shot from Charlie Bell with just over a minute remaining, to preserve the shutout and secure the 2-0 victory.
