Men's golf places third at NAC Championships

BRANDON, Vt. -- The University of Maine at Farmington golf team placed third at the North Atlantic Conference Championships at Neshobe Country Club this weekend.

Husson University captured the championship for the fifth straight year. The Eagles posted a two-day total of 585 to stay ahead of Castleton State College (618) and Farmington (620). Maine Maritime Academy (721), Johnson State College (724) and Green Mountain College (813) rounded out the tournament field.

Castleton's William Banfield captured medalist honors with a two-round total of 141 (72-69).

Nick Waltz (Damariscotta, Maine) finished fourth to lead the Beavers at 146 (76-70) and earned all-conference recognition, while Orion Cochrane (Greenville, Maine) placed seventh at 154 (78-76).

Farmington's Joe Messerman (Brunswick, Maine) received NAC Rookie of the Year honors after shooting a 160 (84-76) to tie teammate Rich Matthews (Portland, Maine) at 11th. Matthews shot 85-75. Reid Bond (Farmington, Maine) turned in a 183 (93-90) to come in 21st.
