Men's golf hosts UMF Invitational, Waltz earns medalist honors

FARMINGTON -- University of Maine at Farmington's Nick Waltz (Damariscotta, Maine) claimed medalist honors at the UMF Invitational today at Sunday River Golf Club.

Waltz finished with a 75 followed by Bowdoin College's Max Bridges (Omaha, Neb.) at 76 and Husson University's Mike Hersey (Presque Isle, Maine) at 77.

For the 10th straight year, Husson won the UMF Invitational. This was the tightest victory for the Eagles during the decade span as Husson and Bowdoin College tied at 320, but a matching cards of the fifth player tiebreaker gave Husson the win. The Polar Bears placed second followed by Farmington (325), University of New England (329), St. Joseph's College (332), University of Southern Maine (339), Bates College (366) and Maine Maritime Academy (379). Following Waltz, the Beavers' Orion Cochrane (Greenville, Maine) was also one of eight golfers to sneak in under 80 at 79. Joe Messerman (Brunswick, Maine) at 84, Reid Bond (Farmington, Maine) at 87 and Rich Matthews (Portland, Maine) at 88 finished Farmington's competitors.

All eight teams are scheduled to compete at the State of Maine Championships Friday and Saturday at the Boothbay Country Club.
