Women's basketball leaves Lyndon with loss

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. -- Lyndon State College held off University of Maine at Farmington 73-66 in North Atlantic Conference women's basketball action this afternoon.

The Beavers (6-8 overall, 3-2 NAC) are tabbed to take on Thomas College at home Wednesday (women at 5:30 p.m., men to follow). Lyndon ran its record to 6-7 (2-2).

Jillian Ross (Belfast, Maine) had 13 points and six rebounds for the Beavers, Emma Morrison (Saco, Maine) had 11 points and Holly Oliver (Belgrade Lakes, Maine) 10 points. Ashley Busque (Belgrade, Maine) and Kenni Norton (Strong, Maine) had three assists each for Farmington, which turned the ball over 31 times in the game.

Donna Lawson, the NAC's leading scorer, led the way with a 23-point, nine-rebound and five-steal effort for Lyndon while Stephanie Barclay had 13 points, including eight consecutive points in the final five minutes to seal the win. Ariel McConkey had 12 points off the bench for the winners, Naomi White chipped in 11 and Maisie Sanchez contributed a team-high four assists for the Hornets.

Ross scored 11 points, while Lawson netted 15 as the teams battled through the first half. The game was tied seven times in the opening half before a Katherine Gagne (Dixfield, Maine) basket allowed the Beavers to trot into intermission with a 31-30 lead.

Starting with a Lawson jumper, the Hornets took over early in the second half, outscoring the Beavers 14-6 out of the break to build a 44-37 advantage with 14:30 left in the game. Farmington trailed by as many as 10 points before a 14-5 run helped the Beavers to 58-57 on two foul shots by Rachel Clement (Gray, Maine) with 4:01 remaining.

The Hornets expanded their command to 64-57 on a McConkey trey with 2:42 left. The Beavers mounted one last push with a Norton hoop cutting the lead to 68-66 with 36 seconds to play, but the Hornets scored the final five points to take the 73-66 win.
