Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – Husson University scored on the University of Maine at Farmington in the game's third minute and then the two teams battled for another 87 minutes without seeing any changes on the scoreboard, as the Eagles escaped Prescott Field with a 1-0 win over the Beavers on Wednesday in a key North Atlantic Conference women's soccer matchup.
Husson held onto a share of first place in the NAC with the win, improving to 7-1-0 with 21 points in conference play with a 7-11-0 overall record. UMaine-Farmington fell to 5-2-1 in the NAC, 9-6-1 overall, but remains in good shape to host a NAC Tournament quarterfinal matchup with 16 points.
Husson's Hannah Clough scored the game's only goal just 2:43 in the contest, unassisted.
From there, UMaine-Farmington outshot Husson, 17-4, and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities but were unable to get anything past Eagles keeper Jess Poulin. Poulin finished the day with seven saves, while UMaine-Farmington keeper Beth Lebel (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) logged one save.
"I think our team played as well as I could ask them to play," said UMF head women's soccer coach Molly Wilkie. "We possessed well, had good passing combinations, we had good quality scoring chances – we just didn't finish, and Husson capitalized on a free kick opportunity. That is the way the game goes sometimes, but we're looking forward to getting back on the field Saturday against Johnson."
UMaine-Farmington closes out its 2012 regular season on Saturday, Oct. 20, at Johnson State, while Husson will host Colby-Sawyer.
