Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. - University of Maine at Farmington women's soccer team (5-6-0, 3-1-0) could not bounce back from two first-half goals in its first North Atlantic Conference loss against Castleton University (4-6-3,3-1-1) at Spartan Stadium on Saturday.
UMF's defense was put under pressure early as Shelby McLenithan scored Castleton's first goal of the match at 5:26 from Izzy Hutnak. At 25:30 McLenithan crossed the ball into the box, finding the foot of Makenzi Bellando who placed a shot in the bottom right corner of the net.
The Beavers weathered a 13 shot storm by the Spartans and went into halftime down 2-0.
Just over 45 seconds into the second half, Bellando would score again with the assist coming from Hutnak. Castleton put two more goals away before time was up. UMF keeper Kiana Thompson (Industry, Maine/Mt.Blue) stopped an initial shot by McLenithan, but Bri DiPhilippo collected the rebound and notched a goal in the 51st minute. McLenithan was able to set up Hutnak for the final tally at 57:34.
The best chance for UMF was in the second half when Katie Clark (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) slotted the ball to Ashley Gleason (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) who lofted a shot high and wide of the crossbar.
Despite only giving up four corner kick throughout the contest, the Beavers were outshot by the Spartans 21-7.
In 70:40 minutes of play for UMF, Thompson stopped eight shots and had a key breakaway save in the first half to keep the momentum alive. Freshman MiKayla Cameron (Monmouth,Maine/Monmouth) had one save, adding a smothering save of her own. For Castleton, Jessica Binkowski had two saves on the day and Emma Parent saw no shots in 21 minutes.
UMaine-Farmington will continue NAC play at Green Mountain College on Sunday at 12 p.m.
