FARMINGTON, Maine - On Tuesday afternoon the Bates Bobcats were able to tally a goal just a minute and 45 seconds into the game and hold off the UMaine-Farmington Beavers en route to a 1-0 non-conference victory at Leib Field.
The Bobcats goal was generated off from a free kick from just inside the attacking half of the field. Henry Kuenstler (London, England) served the ball into the box where Alec Szwarcewicz (Newton, Mass.) won a header and flicked it over to Ciaran Bardong (Manhasset, N.Y.) who headed it home to give the Bobcats the early lead.
Bardong's second minute goal would prove to be the game winner. Despite a couple of chances, the Beavers were unable to find an equalizer. The Beavers best opportunity to score came in the 21st minute of the first half. After a throw-in ricocheted off a couple of heads, the ball bounced straight up into the air where senior midfielder Aric Belanger (Manchester, Maine) ran onto it, heading it towards goal. The ball traveled over the head of Bobcat goalkeeper Bruce David (Pittsburgh, Penn.) but hit directly off the crossbar and bounced over the goal, keeping the score 1-0.
The teams would play an evenly matched, physical second half, but did not generate any scoring.Â
Senior goalkeeper Jonah Sautter (Lisbon, Maine) registered four saves in the defeat. David did not have to make a save in the shutout.Â
The Bobcats held a 15-5 advantage in shots, 5-0 in shots on goal, and 7-4 in corner kicks.Â
Following the loss the Beavers fell to 4-3-1 while the Bobcats record now sits at 5-4.
