Beavers Drop Season Opener to Pilgrims

CASTLETON, Vermont - The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team opened up their season on Saturday evening against New England College in the Spartan Classic Tournament hosted by Castleton University. The Beavers dropped the contest 66-46 to fall to 0-1 on the season.

The Beavers were paced on offense by junior Maddy White (Waldoboro, Maine) as she tallied a team high 12 points in the defeat. Victoria Garand (Portland, Maine) added eight points while Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) chipped in seven. Jalyn Stacy (West Baldwin, Maine) and Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) each added six points for the Beavers. 

The Pilgrims were led offensively by Kathleen Rodriguez (McFarlane, Calif.) who tallied a double-double with 15 points and ten rebounds on the evening. Ericka Pratt (Miami, Florida) also chipped in a double-double for the Pilgrims with 11 points and 15 rebounds. 

The Pilgrims jumped out to a seven point lead after the first quarter and were able to extend their lead to 17 by halftime and were up by 20 at the end of the third quarter. 

The Beavers were able to turn the Pilgrims over 23 times, including five steals from Dwyer, leading to 17 points off from turnovers. 

Aside from the score, the big advantage came on the boards. The Pilgrims out rebounded the Beavers by a total of 61-35 which led to 20 second chance points for the Pilgrims.

The Beavers will have a chance to bounce back on Sunday, November 13th as they take on Castleton University at 3 PM in their second game at the Spartan Classic.
