Beavers Fall Late to Hornets

LYNDONVILLE, Vermont - The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team led for a majority of the game on Saturday afternoon but could not hold on to their lead in the fourth quarter and dropped their North Atlantic Conference contest at the hands of Northern Vermont-Lyndon 78-71.

The Beavers came out of the gates hot from the three point line, hitting three of their six attempts in the first quarter en route to a 14-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Freshman guard Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) paced the Beavers in the quarter with a pair of threes. 

The Beavers would push their lead up to eight in the second quarter following Maddy White (Waldoboro, Maine) converting an and-one opportunity. The Hornets cut the Beaver lead to three following a 5-0 run. Dwyer would respond with a 6-0 run of her own, draining two more three pointers to give the Beavers a nine point lead. 

The Hornets closed out the half strong, trailing by three, 32-29 going into the third quarter. 

The Beavers started out the third quarter on fire and went on a 15-6 run to take a 12 point lead just 4:20 into the third quarter. The Beavers held a 50-38 lead following a White three with 4:53 to go in the quarter. The Hornet responded quickly and polished the quarter off with a 14-2 run to tie the game at 52 heading into the fourth quarter. 

The Beavers would once again start out a quarter strong, taking an eight point lead, 69-61 lead with 4:15 to play in the game. The Hornets once again responded, scoring on their final eight possessions, closing the game out on a 17-2 run to capture the NAC conference victory.

Dwyer scored 21 points, White added 13, and Jacqui Hamilton (Gorham, Maine), making her first appearance of the season, chipped in 12 for the Beavers.

The Hornets got a monster performance out of Riann Fortin who tallied 41 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Hornets to their second victory of the season.

The Beavers will be on the road again on Tuesday, December 6th when they take on Bowdoin at 6 PM.
