Women's basketball falls to NVU-Lyndon in NAC Tourney First Round matchup

FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball saw its 2021-22 season come to a close on Tuesday with a 73-61 loss to Northern Vermont University-Lyndon, in a First-Round contest in the 2022 North Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.

UMaine-Farmington finished the season with a 10-10 overall record.

Northern Vermont-Lyndon, the no. 5 seed out of the East Division, outscored the host Beavers, 21-7, in the fourth quarter on its way to the win.

UMaine-Farmington went into the final stanza with a 54-52 lead, and the Beavers were still within three of Northern Vermont-Lyndon, 64-61, following a traditional three-point play by Alex Bessey with 1:34 remaining on the game clock.

The Hornets closed out the game with a 9-0 run to seal the win, going 4-for-6 at the free-throw line over the final minute-and-a-half while holding the Beavers to 0-of-5 shooting from the field.

After shooting .480 (24-of-50) from the field over the first three quarters of play, UMF connected on just three of its 19 field goal attempts (.158) over the final 10 minutes. The Beavers finished the game shooting 39.1 percent from the field, while the Hornets shot at a 46.4 percent (26-of-56) clip.

Bessey paced the Beavers with 16 points with six rebounds, five assists, and three steals, while McKenna Brodeur charted a double-double in her final collegiate game with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Bea Stafford came off the bench to tally 12 points with seven boards.

Northern Vermont-Lyndon finished with four players in double figures, led by Lea Crompton with 30 points and five assists. She went 11-of-21 from the field on Tuesday against UMaine-Farmington, including a 5-of-7 mark from long range.

Riann Fortin tallied 13 points with eight rebounds, and Saleena Porter and Sage Smith chipped in with 12 and 10 points respectively. Porter also grabbed eight rebounds for the Hornets.

NVU-Lyndon will now advance to the NAC East Division quarterfinal against Maine Maritime Academy on Friday, Feb. 18, at 5:30 p.m. in Castine, Maine.
