FARMINGTON, Maine - On Tuesday evening in Dearborn Gymnasium both the University of Maine at Farmington and Northern Vermont-Lyndon women's basketball teams struggled on offense as the Beavers shot 25% (13-52) from the field to the Hornets 21.3% (13-61). But the Hornets would get hot at the right time and take home a 40-28 victory.
Despite struggling as a team on offense for much of the night, the Beavers jumped out of the gates quickly in the 1st quarter. The Beavers took a quick 8-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game hitting four of their first five shot attempts. Senior Victoria Garand (Portland, Maine) tallied six of the eight points in the fun converting a pair of layups and a free throw line jumper.Â
The Beavers were held scoreless for the remainder of the 1st quarter, but held the Hornets to just five points and took an 8-5 lead into the 2nd quarter.Â
The second quarter was more of the same for each team. Freshman Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) converted a pair of layups for the Beavers who outscored the Hornets 6-5 in the quarter and took a 14-10 lead into halftime.Â
Dwyer scored the first five points of the 3rd quarter for the Beavers, hitting another layup and the first three-pointer of the game for either team.Â
The Hornets started to hit a few more shots in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Beavers 11-8 in the quarter. Sage Smith scored four points in the quarter for the Hornets.
In the 4th quarter, Jaycie Stevens (Pittston, Maine) opened the quarter with a layup to give the Beavers a 24-21 lead. But the Hornets got hot, going on a 14-0 run to take an 11-point lead. Jalyn Stacey (West Baldwin, Maine) tallied a pair of layups in the quarter, but the Beavers were unable to overcome the 14-0 Hornet run, dropping the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game.
Dwyer scored a team-high nine points and Garand added six for the Beavers. Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) led the Beavers on the glass with 12 rebounds. For the Hornets, Smith scored a game-high 13 points, while Riann Fortin pitched in eight points and 11 rebounds. Kerigan Disorda also added eight points.
The Beavers are now 1-11 and 0-4 in NAC play while the Hornets improve to 6-6 on the season and 2-1 in NAC play.
