RUMFORD, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's alpine team swept the podium this morning at Black Mountain with three skiers placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in today's season opening giant slalom event. The Beavers would take 1st place as a team in the event as the top three finishers for each team contributed to the team's total time. The Beavers' three skier time was 3:44.12, 17 seconds faster than 2nd place Saint Joseph's College of Maine.

Grace Mahmood (Oxford, Conn.) took home 1st place honors with a two run time of 1:13.65. Mahmood stood in 1st place after her 37.51 second 1st run but knocked off more than a second in her 2nd run, finishing the run in 36.14 seconds to take 1st on the podium.

Lauren Kessen (Sussex, Wisc.), competing in her first collegiate event, placed 2nd with a two run time of 1:14.36. In Kessen's 1st run she finished in 37.90 seconds, holding onto 2nd place. Similarly to Mahmood, Kessen knocked off well over a second off her time in here 2nd run, finishing it in 36.46 seconds.

Tegan Andrew (Goffstown, N.H.) finished 3rd on the day to help the Beavers sweep the podium. In Andrew's 1st run, she finished in 38.85 seconds and stood in 4th place. As was the case with her teammates, Andrew's cut well of a second off from her time in her second run. She finished her second run in 37.26 seconds for a total time of 1:16.11.

Saint Joseph's College of Maine took 2nd place with 29 place points. The University of Maine and Bowdoin College tied for 3rd with 43 place points.

The Beavers will be back on the mountain tomorrow at Black Mountain once again, competing in the slalom portion of this weekend's event.
