Women’s Hoops Falls to Thomas After Terriers’ Big 4th Quarter

WATERVILLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team fell on the road on Tuesday evening at the hands of Thomas College, 63-51 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest.

The two teams played an even 1st quarter with neither team taking a lead larger than four points. With the Terriers leading 11-7, the Beavers closed out the quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 14-13 lead into the second quarter. Jaycie Stevens (Pittston, Maine) led the Beavers surge with five of the seven points.

The Terriers jumped out quickly in the 2nd quarter, quickly regaining a three point lead. A layup and a free throw from Victoria Garand (Portland, Maine) tied the game back up at 19. Maddy White (Waldoboro, Maine) drilled a three-pointer two minutes later to give the lead back to the Beavers. With the Beavers holding onto a narrow 26-24 lead with 3:40 left to go in the half, the Beaver closed out the half on a 9-2 run to take a nine point lead.

In the 3rd quarter, the Beavers began to struggle from the field, converting 1-9 from the field and being held to seven points in the quarter. The Beavers could only muster two points for the first 7:20 of the 3rd quarter as the Terriers were able to slowly crawl back into the game and eventually take a narrow lead. The Beavers hit 5-6 from the free throw line in the quarter and would head to the 4th quarter tied at 42.

The Terriers opened up the 4th quarter on a 9-0 run before a pair of Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) free throws snapped the spurt. A Garand layup cut the deficit to five. But Samantha Fortin responded with a layup of her own to keep the Beavers at bay. Jacqui Hamilton (Gorham, Maine) hit a layup on the next possession to pull the Beavers back within five with two minutes to play. But Fortin once again had an answer. This time she converted an and-one that would turn out to be the dagger. The Terriers hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

The Beavers were led offensively by Dwyer who scored a team-high 13 points and added seven rebounds and three assists. Maddy White scored nine points and grabbed three steals while Rosalie White (Lisbon Falls, Maine) added eight points for the Beavers.

Fortin scored a game-high 26 points on 12-20 shooting from the field. Hannah Coolen pitched in with 10 points for the Terriers.

The Beavers drop to 2-18 on the season with a 1-9 record in NAC play. The Terriers are now 3-17 with a 2-9 record in conference play.
