Roos Use Big 3rd Quarter to Pull Away From Beavers

FARMINGTON, Maine - On Saturday afternoon SUNY Canton took down the University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team 67-57 on the heels of a big third quarter. The Roos are now 8-7 on the season with a 4-2 record in conference while the Beavers drop to 1-10 with an 0-3 record in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play.

The Roos were able to jump out to a quick seven point lead behind three three-pointers, one from Joie Culkin and a pair from Hope Aniceto. A pair of threes from junior Jaycie Stevens (Pittsfield, Maine) helped keep the Beavers within striking distance at the end of the first quarter as they trailed 19-13.

The Beavers went on a 9-0 run in the opening three minutes of the second quarter to take a three point lead. The run was sparked by five points from junior Maddy White (Waldoboro, Maine). The teams were unable to create any separation from one another as the Roos took a 29-28 lead into the break.

The Roos came out of halftime on fire converting on 7-13 from the field, including 4-6 from the three-point line, outscoring the Beavers 24-15 in the quarter. With the game tied 34-34 with 5:30 minutes to play in the third quarter, the Roos closed on a 19-9 run to take a 10 point lead into the fourth quarter.

The Beavers cut the lead to single digits on two occasions but could draw no closer than nine points.

Stevens was phenomenal this afternoon for the Beavers finishing with 17 points, sevens assists, and five rebounds, hitting five of her nine threes to pace the Beavers. White chipped in with 14 points on 5-7 shooting from the field and 3-5 from deep.

The Roos were led by Culkin who finished the game with a double-double notching 16 points and 13 rebounds while adding seven steals. Aniceto added 16 points and Sophia Munoz added a double-double as well with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

The Roos held a large 47-30 advantage on the boards, including 17 offensive in the contest.
