AUBURN, Maine - Tife Agunloye ripped a left-footed rocket into the back of the net with two seconds to play to give Bates College a 2-1 against the University of Maine at Farmington on Tuesday afternoon in a back and forth non-conference battle.
The Beavers got on the scoreboard first early in the 1st half when Christian Beliveau (Auburn, Maine) found the back of the net for the 4th time this season just 2:17 into the contest. Mohamed Adow (Auburn, Maine) was credited with the assist after his pass pinballed off a Bobcat defender right to Beliveau.
The Bobcats found the answer in the 17th minute when they were awarded a goal on what was ruled an own goal. A Gerard Costa Farré corner kick was sent into the box where Beaver starting goalkeeper Jack Wormald (Salisbury, N.H.) looked to be positioned to take care of any trouble. When Wormald came out of the net to attempt to pick off the cross, he ran into a teammate as the hit of his chest and deflected into the back of the net to tie the game up at one apiece.
The game seemed destined to end in a 1-1 draw when Cade McHugh's (Little Compton, R.I.) throw-in in the final 20 seconds of the game got picked off by Bates goalkeeper Trevor Hammond. Hammond quickly outletted the ball to Cesar Hoover who one-touched a long ball down the field where Wilson Smith was able to get behind the Beaver defense and settle the ball down before sending a centering pass to Ollie Schiff Stein. Schiff Stein fed Agunloye who ripped a shot top-shelf over the outstretched arms of Jackson Leach (Farmingdale, Maine) to seal the win for the Bobcats.
The game was very evenly played but Bates held advantages in shots (17-13), shots on goal (9-5), and corner kicks (8-2).
Wormald made a pair of saves in the 1st half and Leach added five saves in the 2nd half for the Beavers. Hammond posted four saves for the Bobcats.
