BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College field hockey team scored five goals in the 1st quarter en route to the 6-0 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington on Wednesday evening.
Caroline Higgins got the Polar Bears on the board 33 seconds into the game. She then scored her 2nd goal of the game just two minutes later off a feed from Maya Malenfant out in front of the goal.
In the 5th minute the Polar Bears drew a penalty corner that was inserted by Higgins. Higgins insert pass went right to Malenfant who used a stick stop to drop it off right to Sage Patel who beat Beaver first-year goalie Ella Grant (Sturbridge, Mass.) to extend Bowdoin's lead to 3-0.
Goals from Sophia Rosati and Emily Ferguson in the 12th and 13th minutes extended the Polar Bear lead to 5-0 after the 1st quarter.
After the opening 15 minutes, the Beavers were able to keep Bowdoin scoreless until the 4th quarter when Olicia Cunningham scored an unassisted goal.
Morgan Towne (Grafton, N.H.) tallied a shot on goal for the Beavers. Grant picked up 5 saves in goal for the Beavers while Paris Howes (Jay, Maine) and Emma Willey (Lisbon, Maine) each picked up defensive saves.
Higgins led the offense for the Polar Bears, finishing with two goals and an assist. Olivia Cunningham pitched in with a goal and an assist.
Bowdoin held advantages in shots (20-1), shots on goal (13-1), and penalty corners (11-0).
UP NEXT
The Beavers game that was scheduled for Saturday against Thomas College has been postponed. The Beavers next game will be on the road Sunday afternoon against Dean College at 2:00 PM. Farmington took down Dean 1-0 a season ago.
