Beavers Give up Early Goal, Fall at Home to SUNY Delhi

FARMINGTON, Maine - Jaquan Williams scored a goal in the 11th minute to lift SUNY Delhi past the University of Maine at Farmington in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest at Leib Field, 1-0.

Williams won a header on a high lofting ball, flicking it over William Dowse (Sherborn, Maine). Williams stepped around Dowse and got behind the Beavers defense. Williams beat another Beaver defender as he carried the ball along the end line and blasted a shot from close range to score the game's only goal.

The Broncos were able to control the play for most of the 1st half holding a steep 8-0 advantage in shots going into the break. The Beavers were able to draw a pair of corner kicks in the half, but were unable to get anything on net.

After surrendering the goal in the 11th minute of the game, sophomore goalkeeper Jack Wormald (Salisbury, N.H.) was fantastic in goal for the Beavers making timely and fearless saves to keep the Beavers in the game.

Wormald made a pair of important saves in the opening minute of the 2nd half. The first came on a set piece from 25 yards out that was bent over the wall by Roberto Velasquez Osorio. Just seconds later Williams made a similar move, carrying the ball along the end line toward goal. Wormald came off his goal line to meet Williams and dove at the ball, wearing the shot from Williams directly in the chest to keep the deficit at one.

SUNY Delhi looked to have doubled the lead in the 50th minute when Vaughn Bottex headed a ball off a corner kick that got past Wormald. However, Jack Bammel (Bonita Springs, Fla.) was able to clear the ball off the goal line.

First-year Mohamed Adow (Auburn, Maine) recorded the Beavers first shot of the game in the 71st minute but was unable to get enough on the shot to get past Jonathan Walch.

In the closing minutes of the game the Beavers had their best opportunity to tie the game. Cade McHugh (Little Compton, R.I.) took a corner kick from the left wing that was perfectly placed onto the foot of Dowse who got redirected a shot hard on goal but Walch made a spectacular save to secure the shutout victory.

SUNY Delhi held advantages in shots (17-3), shots on goal (9-2), and corner kicks (9-5). Following the loss the Beavers drop to 6-5-2 while the Broncos are now 6-2-4.
