FARMINGTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and coasted on their way to a 65-43 victory at home against Fisher College on day two of the UMF Tip-Off Classic.
The Beavers got their offense rolling early, never trailing in what was a wire to wire win to pick up their 2nd victory of the early season.
The Beavers scored the first five points of the game, four of which came from first-year Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine). Senior Jaycie Stevens (Pittston, Maine) controlled the 1st quarter for the Beavers, hitting all three of her three-point attempts, helping the Beavers open up a 23-8 lead after one quarter.
Five quick points from Ladaeja Robinson pulled the Falcons within 11 in the opening minutes of the 2nd quarter. A Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) layup put an end to the Falcons run. But a layup from Olivia Hamel and a jump shot from Tyler Wilkinson pulled the Falcons back within eight at 25-17.
The Beavers closed the half on an 11-2 lead to regain complete control of the game and take a 36-19 lead into halftime.
Farmington continued to extend their lead to open up the 3rd quarter, getting an easy bucket in the paint from Stevens and a pair from Dow to help open up a 24-point lead. Mikayla Rioux (Winslow, Maine) also tallied a big three to help the Beavers extend their lead.
The Beavers led by 26 heading into the 4th quarter. The Beavers went cold offensively in the 4th, but their defense kept the Falcons from getting back into the game and coasted to the 65-43 win.
The Beavers played strong man to man defense throughout the contest, holding the Falcons to just 25.4% (17-67) shooting from the field and forcing 22 turnovers.
The Beavers had a balanced scoring attack led by McMinis and Dow who each tallied 12 points. Stevens added 11 while Sarah Poli (Benton, Maine) pitched in with 10 points and six rebounds.
