NEWRY, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington men's freeski/snowboard team swept Sunday afternoon's season opening rail jam event at Sunday River.
Five of the Beavers nine athletes competed at Sunday's event, four snowboarders and one freeskier. On the snowboarding side Ezra Mathieu (Lewiston, Maine), Noah Hofeman (Hanover, Mass.), Blue Lagoda (Syracuse, N.Y.), and Caelan Billings (Sullivan, Maine) competed while Carson Theriault (Fort Kent, Maine) was the lone freeskier from UMF to compete
Mathieu took home gold on Sunday, standing out to the judges by landing a handful of tricks including a 360 off the tube and a boardslide 270 out of the A frame rail.
Hofeman grabbed silver, impressing the judges with a series of tricks. His most impressive was his attempt at a boardslide disaster on the down-flat-down rail.Â
Finishing in 3rd place and taking home the bronze medal was Lagoda who impressed with his ability to land several tricks consecutively including numerous clean boardslides as well as a dead lung.Â
Billings, who competed in his first event as a Beaver, finished in 4th place. Billings landed clean 180s off the rail going both directions.
Theriault began his senior season by adding another freeski rail jam gold medal to his collection. Theriault pulled off a series of maneuvers including a switch lip 270 on the down portion of the down-flat-down rail.Â

The Beavers next competition will be January 6th and 7th when they compete in a slopestyle event at Sugarloaf.
