BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine at Farmington men's and women's track and field teams kicked off the New England Championships on Friday evening in Boston at The TRACK.
Each team competed in a pair of events. On the men's side, Alixx Canwell (Chelsea, Maine) competed in the weight throw while Jimmy Reel (Nashua, N.H.), Seemus Reeve (Kittery, Maine), Justin Castaldo (Scarborough, Maine), and Covy Dufort (Wells, Maine) competed in the distance medley relay. On the women's side, Charlotte Wentworth (Sidney, Maine), Abigail Minott (Bath, Maine), Eve Poteet (Fairhill, Maryland), and Anna MacDonald (Bangor, Maine) competed in the distance medley relay and Erica Johnson (Nobleboro, Maine), Kiley Meader (Sidney, Maine), Kennedy Todd (Scarborough, Maine), and Minott competed in the 4x200 relay.
Canwell placed 16th overall in the weight throw. His best throw measured in at 14.64 meters. The Weight throw was a highly competitive event with Jacob Rigoli of Plymouth State taking 1st place with a throw of 17.98 meters.
Reel, Reeve, Castaldo, and Dufort placed 14th in the distance medley relay. Reel opened up the race completing the 1200 meter portion in 3:25. Reeve was 2nd, completing the 400 meter portion in 52.70 seconds. Castaldo was the 3rd runner, finishing the 800 meter portion in 2:00.30. Dufort completed the last leg of the race, finishing the 1600 meter portion in 4:28. Reel, Reeve, Castaldo, and Dufort combined for a time of 10:47.15, a program best time.
Wentworth, Minott, Poteet, and MacDonald placed 21st overall in the distance medley relay. Wentworth started off with a time of 4:00 in the 1200 meter portion. Minott followed her up with a time of 1:06 in the 400 meter portion of the relay. Next up was Poteet who finished the 800 meter in 2:44. MacDonald finished the 1600 meter in 5:51 to help the team finish with a total time of 13:42.52, a program record by more than 25 seconds.
Johnson, Meader, Todd, and Minott finished the 4x200 meter relay in 1:55.85 to place 23rd overall in an extremely competitive race.
