Oneonta Takes a Pair From the Beavers at the RussMatt Invitational

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The University of Maine at Farmington dropped a pair of games on Wednesday afternoon to the SUNY Oneonta Dragons, 9-2 and 10-6 at the RussMatt Invitational.

Game One

The Beavers looked poised to take an early lead in the top of the 1st inning. Jonny Pruet (Waterford, Maine) led off the game with a single, Nate Coombs (Thomaston, Maine) walked, and Hunter LaBossiere (Oxford, Maine) reached on an error to load the bases with nobody out. Ryan Sargent (Windham, Maine) struck out swinging and Will Cauchon (Kingston, Mass.) grounded into a double play to end the threat.

Freshman starting pitcher Sam Parsell (Newington, Conn.) struggled with his command early on, walking the first two batters of the game. They were able to steal 2nd and 3rd base to give Oneonta runners in scoring position with nobody out. Parsell got Liam Kaseta to strike out but Josh Gilkey scored on a wild pitch in the next at-bat to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead.

The Dragons plated three in the bottom of the 2nd on a pair of hits and three walks. Anthony Folgia delivered the big two RBI single in the inning for Oneonta.

Sam Wrigley (Farmington, Maine) took over for Parsell on the mound in the 3rd inning. Wrigley gave up a single run in the 3rd and then surrendered four in the 4th as the Dragons extended their lead to 9-0.

Logan Holcomb (Hebron, Conn.) and Kyle Sawyer (Saco, Maine) each tallied a scoreless inning of relief for the Beavers.

Still trailing 9-0 going into the top of the 7th inning, the Beavers refused to be shutout, scoring a pair of runs with two outs. Juan Subervi (Lynn, Mass.) started the rally with a rocket to right field for his 1st hit of the season. Coombs followed by reaching on an error and LaBossiere drilled a single to load the bases for Sargent. Sargent ripped a ground ball between the 1st and 2nd basemen that scored Subervi and Coombs. Oneonta would work out of any further trouble to close out the victory.

Game Two

Everything was going the Beavers way early in game two. Junior starting pitcher TJ Dorn (Westbrook, Maine) retired the Beavers 1-2-3 in the top of the 1st and the Beavers followed by tallying four runs to grab the early lead. Similarly to game one, Pruett, Coombs, and LaBossiere reached base to load the bases with no one out once again. Sargent was retired on an infield fly and Parsell struck out swinging as the Dragons were looking to tight rope out of danger again. But Cauchon wasn't going to let this opportunity go to waste. He hit a ball to right that Oneonta the right fielder lost in the sun, allowing the bases to clear and give the Beavers an 3-0 lead.

Jacob Kateley (Deep River, Conn.) ws hit by a pitch and Jameson Bloch (Attleboro, Mass.) drew a walk to extend the inning and reload the bases. Danny Terhune (South Burlington, Vermont) then drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Cauchon and made it 4-0.

Farmington kept things rolling in the bottom of the 2nd inning. LaBossiere drew a one-out walk before Sargent hit a double down the left field line to give the Beavers 2nd and 3rd with Parsell coming to the plate. Parsell followed up with a double of his own to drive in LaBossiere and Sargent to extend the lead to 6-0.

Trouble began to set in for the Beavers in the top of the 3rd. Dorn began to struggle to find the strike zone, walking three in the inning. Nick Jacoby also reached on an error in the inning. Turner and Kaseta each drove in a run to chase Dorn from the game. Lucas Tuttle (Framingham, Mass.) came in with the bases loaded and got Foglia to ground into an inning ending double play to end the threat.

The Dragons scored four runs on three hits and three errors in the top of the 4th to tie the game.

The Beavers went down in order in the bottom half of the 4th. Oneonta kept on rolling in the top of the 5th, plating three more on three hits to grab the lead. They tallied an insurance run in the top of the 6th to close out the scoring and seal the game two victory

UP NEXT

The Beavers will finish off their Florida trip tomorrow afternoon when they take on Colby-Sawyer in a doubleheader. Game one's first pitch is scheduled for 4 pm.
